iTunes Review

Heart was either a late-blooming hippie-rock combo or a forerunner of 1980s-style mainstream heavy metal — take your pick. What’s clear is that the band’s 1976 debut Dreamboat Annie provided a refreshing injection of female energy into the era’s male-dominated rock scene. Singer Ann Wilson’s prodigious pipes earned her comparisons with Robert Plant — and, to be honest, her shrill high notes do bring Led Zeppelin’s lead shrieker to mind. But such similarities are offset by the group’s Jefferson Airplane-like trippiness and knack for pop hooks. Ann’s sister Nancy brings out Heart’s gentler aspects with her acoustic guitar work, highlighted on “Soul Of The Sea” and the billowing title number. Lead guitarist Roger Fisher unleashes crunchy riffs and searing fretwork, spurring Ann on to swagger through tunes like “Magic Man” and “White Lightning And Wine.” All of these elements come together in “Crazy On You,” a well-directed celebration of madness matching delicately poetic verses with a go-for-the-throat chorus. Beyond all this, there’s a genuine spirit and ambition to Dreamboat Annie that places it a cut above typical mainstream rock. Heart had soul at the dawn of their career, as this still-impressive first effort demonstrates.

Absoulutely Phenomonal

This album is just hard to believe. I lived it in the 70s/80s. I am 61 years old now. I have revisited it via Itunes and am more blown away than ever. I think Crazy On You is sincerely one of the best rock arrangements I have ever heard. Everything about that song/arrangement is top notch. Beautiful acoustic lead in, deriving that irrestible driving rock lead, the astounding lead vocal of Ann Wilson (or is it Nancy?) whoever, it is astounding stuff.

Magic Man is just as great. What great memories, what phenomonal music. Thank you Dear Ladies.

Great Debut, Great Album

Definitely one of my favorite albums of all time, "Dreamboat Annie" was the culmination of everything that has gone on in rock & roll up to that point. Daringly mixing up elements of hard rock, prog, folk, pop, blues, & psych; we are treated to a rock & roll masterpiece. Each song on this album could've been a hit, and the actual hits are some of the best songs on the album ("Crazy On You" being my personal favorite, even though it was a hit). From start to finish, "Dreamboat Annie" is solid. It's a shame that their debut had to be their "Dark Side Of The Moon", because just like most bands or artists who made their "signature" album, Heart only sporadically showed glimpses of the same genius ("Barracuda", "Love Alive", "Mistral Wind", "Heartless", "Devil Delight"; just to name a few), after the release of "Dreamboat Annie".

Sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson are the creative spark behind Heart, a hard rock group who initially found success in the mid-'70s, only to reach greater heights after engineering a major comeback a decade later. The daughters of a Marine Corps captain, Ann (born June 19, 1950) and Nancy (born March 16,...
