iTunes Review
Penning the Oscar-nominated script for Chicago helped net mercurial Hollywood filmmaker Bill Condon the plum assignment of adapting another modern Broadway smash, and he's delivered yet another increasingly rare Hollywood musical triumph, one powered by this infectious, soulful soundtrack. In a story inspired by the roller-coaster career of '60s Motown queens The Supremes, Beyonce Knowles makes the best of several star turns as Deena, the film's Diana Ross-inspired diva, while co-stars Eddie Murphy and Jamie Foxx handsomely channel their own previous pop-music ambitions into the Motown-savory "Patience" and gentle ballad "When I First Saw You," respectively. But it's America Idol stand-out Jennifer Hudson who not only one-ups original Broadway star Jennifer Holiday in the role of Effie, but steals the movie outright with what should be star-making performances of "I Am Changing" and the emotionally wrenching showstopper "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going." Hudson's muscular young soprano often reveals its traditional gospel-blues roots, yet she wields it with the masterful panache of a footlight-bred trouper. And while she doesn't get the star turns of Hudson or Knowles, Tony-winner Anika Noni Rose admirably does much of the soundtrack's heavy lifting as the long-suffering Lorrell.

Dreamgirls is a dream!
As a younger gay man in Musical Theatre, I cannot remember the thrill of the original. I can, however, understand how elated and excited the community (gay and theatre... yes, sometimes they are not the exact same category) was when the original Broadway Cast album was released more than two decades ago because I imagine it to be similar to the elation and excitement I am feeling now. As an album, this movie soundtrack does indeed respect the original by not trying to make it something it isn't. This incarnation still has that Motown sound of all the girls groups from the 1960's; The Crystals, The Ronnettes, The Supremes, and now The Dreams. I think the biggest surprise of the album is Jennifer Hudson's take on "And I am Telling You..." It is very hard for a performer to have to tackle such a song especially when it is so closely identified to another amazingly talented artist; Jennifer Holiday. No one will ever be able to outshine Miss Holiday with this song, but that isn't to say that Miss Hudson is stuck in her shadow. The only song on the album I could have done without was "Listen." Truth be told, I think it is an amazing piece of music and Beyonce performs it remarkably and (given the fact it is quite a departure from the style of music we are normally accustomed to hearing from the diva) surprisingly well. I simply feel this song was not given to the correct voice. Effie (Jennifer Hudson) should have been given the new song. Within the context of the original piece of work for the stage, no one but Effie has a claim for the eleven o'clock number; not even if is Beyonce (ironically, herself being the most successful breakaway artist from the popular girl group Destiny's Child). Overall, I find this new "Dreamgirls" to be exciting, dramatic (everything the girls and the "girls" in the theatre could want), and a great work of a contemporary movie musical soundtrack. It's so great to see the return of Musicals to the big screen. If they're all like "Dreamgirls", keep 'em coming, Hollywood!
Jennifer Hudson's voice makes me weep
"And I am Telling You I'm Not Going" is one of the best songs ever. I saw the original Dreamgirls production with Jennifer Holliday singing that song and I have never forgotten the chills I felt and the tears I shed. This new Jennifer's version seems just as amazing. I cannot wait to see this movie!
