iTunes Review

Neil Young is that rare performer who can transfix an audience with just his voice and an acoustic guitar. The feat is more amazing, considering that his voice is so unorthodox and his acoustic guitar playing rarely displays much flash. Throw in the fact that the audience didn’t know the material presented here since all ten of these tunes had yet to be released as Harvest Moon and you have the Neil Young attack in full force. There are no bursts of applause as the songs begin, just respectful silence as the country-rock tunes flow past. Young punctuates with a little harmonica and throws himself to the piano for “Such a Woman” and to the banjo for “Old King.” Culled from different nights of the tour, this album re-sequences Harvest Moon and plays just as smooth. Tunes such as “Unknown Legend,” “Harvest Moon” and “From Hank to Hendrix” sound even more personal, while “Dreamin’ Man,” “Such a Woman” and “One of These Days” are brought closer to the spotlight as album openers.

Neil: Live and Acoustic

It's good to see such a steady stream of recordings from the Neil Young Archives. I loved the Harvest Moon record when it came out in the early 90s and it's even better to relive it now. The sound quality is excellent and Young delivers with a heartfelt performance. Young fans won't be disappointed with this record!

Neil

Excellent sound from a great Neil era. I found Neil's music during this time and it is absolute bliss to hear it again (and live)! Buy this live album.

Natural Beauty is outstanding, both in sound clarity and lyrical imagery.

I'll wait for Archives Vol. II

Lord knows my temptation to purchase this. I listened to the preview twice. Yea, a little rawer. Yea, just Neil, no band. But, an acoustic set of already mostly acoustic songs that I've already listened to a million+ times... I can wait. The 11:26 Natural Beauty intrigues me, to be sure. But the dreaded iTunes classic "Album Only" comes into play there. So, I'll wait. I'm sure the old man has something more interesting than this up his sleeve somewhere down the road. I'm going to go back to playing Archives Vol. I until then.

After Neil Young left the California folk-rock band Buffalo Springfield in 1968, he slowly established himself as one of the most influential and idiosyncratic singer/songwriters of his generation. Young's body of work ranks second only to Bob Dylan in terms of depth, and he was able to sustain his critical reputation, as well as record sales, for a longer period of time than Dylan, partially because of his willfully perverse work ethic. From the beginning of his solo career in the late '60s through...
