A Great Album to Escape With

Taiwanese-American composer George Shaw has a great knack for the Romantic aesthetic in his compositions. His music is very programmatic and particularly well suited for film soundtrack or TV shows. Shaw is a contemporary composer but one can hear classic elements and influences such as Debussy, Chopin, Gershwin as well as current composers such as Howard Shore and Alan Silvestri in his compositions. All the pieces on “Dreams in the Morning” are no exception. One of Shaw’s strengths is melodic composition to hold and grip the listener. His restrained and tasteful use of orchestration reinforces the motif and compels the listener into a different world. The songs are thoughtfully put together, sometimes beginning with a simple piano introduction to a theme and other times with a lush orchestration to start the soundscape and develops progressively. One by one, the rest of the instruments chime in to lend their sound to the landscape to vividly evoke the imagination. For example, in the track, “Losing the Perfect Love”, the piano begins in a deliberate melancholic way, reminiscent of the Romantics and even a tiny hint of the Impressionists, setting the mood. The simple and tender notes lull the listener as the classical guitar enters and agrees with the piano. The contrasting two instruments are wonderfully juxtaposed in telling the story of a love affair found and lost. The two dance melodically until the guitar drops out leaving the piano to lament ‘losing the perfect love’. “Born to Dream” begins in a similar fashion, a sparse piano to introduce the main melody and theme. The arpeggiating piano immediately calls to mind a familiar lullaby structure with the piano “lulling the listener to sleep.” However, the piece continues with lush strings as we move from sleep to dream to end the first movement and begin the second. The story has Peter Pan undertones with Alan Silvestri-like phrases and choice woodwinds enchanting the dreamer and sweeps the listener away on a journey before bringing it all back. Shaw does not just stay with the traditional or formulaic. In his piece “Legendary Warriors”, Shaw makes great use of the er-hu (Chinese violin) to great effect in establishing mood. Additionally, in “Dancing In the Waves”, Shaw uses non-traditional sounds to produce ethereal and otherworldly settings. All in all, the album is solid and stands up to repeat listening. Whether you are looking to escape or just need a soundtrack to your own life, George Shaw’s “Dreams in the Morning” fits the bill nicely. Pick up a copy, don your headphones, close your eyes and drift away.
