iTunes Review
Neil Diamond is a legend because he dares to dream larger than life. He is shameless with his grandiose ambitions; where other singers try to personalize and make their sentiments more intimate, Diamond is proud to make his feelings into anthems. This collection of covers is great fun. Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine” aims for the rafters of the arena. The Beatles’ “Blackbird” showcases Diamond’s unique phrasings. Randy Newman’s “Feels Like Home” proves Diamond has an ear for a great song even if it’s not always so obvious. His take on Newman’s deeply affecting “Losing You” is even more powerful. For more obvious tunes, he turns to Paul McCartney’s over-covered “Yesterday” and Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” (even Cohen has publicly asked people to stop covering it!) The Eagles’ “Desperado” is a natural. To be a bit playful, Diamond covers the Monkees’ “I’m a Believer,” a song HE wrote for them. Diamond’s relationship with producer Rick Rubin on previous albums has given him the insights necessary to re-find his own production instincts.
Customer Reviews
not so fast ...
I'm sorry, but did anyone actually listen to this album or are you all just letting Diamond ride on reputation? There is very little left of what was once a great voice here: he strains for notes, cuts phrasing because he can't hold enough air to get through them; punches lyrics which need to be caressed (and vice versa). This has the potential to be a great album, but that potential is just not realized. Use your iTunes search to find better interpretations from lesser known singers and you will have a happier end-result.
Sucked In Again
I did it again... I got sucked in! I'm a HUGE Neil Diamond fan and have seen him in concert in excess of 30 times (first one was at the Greek Theater when they recorder Hot August Night (the real one). I think I have the right to be disappointed here. It's boring! The songs themselves should have been great, especially my favorite song, Hallelujah. I really thought he would sing it well but, alas, no. I know, I know... he's getting older and his voice isn't quite as good but that's not my problem here. It's just boring.
Neil, time for some upbeat movin' songs! I'm ready to give up.
Ah, Neil, you still got it.
You can't hide true talent and nothing can stop Neil Diamond from shining. I love his new trend--the laid back yet soulful delivery of each song. I've bought his last few albums and have been delighted with this fresh, raw sound from a true master. I also wish my Mom was around to hear this--Neil was one of her very few favorite pop singers/writers (she was an opera singer). Neil can appeal to multiple generations because he is just that good. About time they inducted him into the Hall of Fame, too! Long past due.
