iTunes Review

The next best thing to seeing the Truckers play in the flesh, this live set is short and sweet, sweaty and raw — in short, 40 minutes of some of the ballsiest rock (Southern or otherwise) to be found this side of the pearly gates. It’s culled from the DVD of the same name — though unfortunately does not include all the songs performed there — which in turn was drawn from two sold-out 2004 shows at Athens, Georgia’s legendary 40 Watt. Heavy on numbers from that year’s fine album The Dirty South, the songlist also includes the searing revenge fantasy ”Sinkhole” from Decoration Day, as well as “The Living Bubba,” a paean to the rawk life as told by a “drunk and stubborn as they come” redneck with AIDS: “But I keep living just to bend that note in two/ I can’t die now ‘cause I got another show.” The Drive-By Truckers’ studio albums deserve every bit of the critical praise they’ve received, but live, the band is a force of nature. The guitars are loud, the voices are hoarse, beer seems to have been involved, but DBT’s love for music, their fans, and performing comes through loud and clear.

Customer Reviews

One of the Greatest Bands Ever!

Jeez, the Truckers are an absolutely amazing band. These 8 tracks here are taken from their live DVD recorded over 2 nights at the 40 Watt Club during the Dirty South tour. I wish they had more tracks from those shows available but hey beggars can't be choosers. I'll take whatever I can get from these goddamn geniuses. If you love the Truckers and are fiending for some more of their live stuff check out archive.org. There are bootleg mp3s on there that you can download for free and most of them sound pretty damn good. Definitely check out their show from the Visulite Theatre on 7/29/04. Whoever recorded it did an amazing job and it sounds like it was recorded professionally. Damn I woulda spent $20 on it. But it's free and it's the Truckers and it's goddamn awesome. There's also an acoustic set they recorded at Mike Cooley's house of just them drinkin' and jammin' out. It's amazing. Like a DBT Unplugged if you will. Do yourself a favor and get those 2 shows if you love the Truckers, you'll be thanking me for it.

Biography

Formed: 1996 in Athens, GA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Boasting a mix of Southern pride, erudite lyrics, and a muscled three-guitar attack, Drive-By Truckers became one of the most well-respected alternative country-rock acts of the 2000s. Led by frontman Patterson Hood and featuring a rotating cast of Georgia and Alabama natives, the band celebrated the South while refusing to paint over its spotty past. History, folklore, politics, and character studies all shared equal space in the Truckers catalog, which offered up its first blast of gutsy, twangy...
