Album Review
Dallas' Graham Colton Band got their first break as an opening act for Counting Crows, and on their debut album you can hear what attracted Adam Duritz & co. to them. They are a straight-ahead guitar rock group, the two electric guitars ringing out over the propulsive rhythm section and dominating the sound, with Colton's acoustic guitar getting an audible strum here and there (and more than that on the occasional song intro) and his gruff, nasal voice cutting through. Rock specialist Brendan O'Brien produced, and he has given the music force without robbing it of its melodic appeal. You wouldn't mistake the group for Counting Crows, but now and then you might think Gin Blossoms were playing, or even Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. The big differences lie in the songs and the frontman. Colton's lyrics find an "I" narrator speaking to a "you" with whom he is (or was) romantically involved, and for the most part he's not bringing good news. It's the oldest subject known to popular music, and Colton doesn't have much new to add to it, which means his songs-as-written don't have the resonance of his mentors'. He also needs to work on his singing to bring out what resonance they might hold. He knows how to sing rock, which is to say, how to stay on the beat and rise above the guitar parts, and he knows how to lean into a chorus. But he doesn't sing like what he's singing matters to him, and so it doesn't matter to the listener, either. Drive is a good beginning for a young rock group; with any luck the bandmembers will look back on it someday and see what it could have been.
Customer Reviews
Not a Bad Rookie Album
First, this isn't Graham Colton Band's 1st Album, its their sophmore album, though few have heard about "Graham Colton Band" much less their first album "Graham Colton". Drive is an overall good album with nice guitar and pretty good lyrics. The lyrics may sound like the lyrics of an average teenage band song and sometimes the guitar sounds the same, but when you put it all together, this makes for a pretty good "rookie" album, and for 6 bucks, its a steal! (the iMac's a steal too, anyone wanna buy me one ;-) ] So yeah, listen to a few 30 second previews, you won't be disappointed.
Graham Colton Keeps You Driving!
You know you have a good CD when you drive around aimlessly in your car just to listen to it. You’ll want to do exactly that after you buy Graham Colton Band’s CD titled "Drive". This up and coming band’s first major label CD, released in May 2004, is commonly described as “Rock and Roll for a new generation”. Although the lead singer, Graham Colton, sees his music differently, “I always felt that our band fit more as a part of the mid- 90’s revival of roots-rock,” says Colton on his band website. After playing coffee shop gigs, and local shows around their home town of Oklahoma City, this group has been featured on the WB’s shows One Tree Hill and Everwood. The group also toured with Kelly Clarkson on her “Hazel Eyes” tour this year and successful previous performances with John Mayer, Maroon 5, Train, and Dave Matthews proved the band had the ability to connect with all types of listeners. The first track on the CD, titled “Don’t Give Up On Me” is a perfect song to start the album with. It sums up the vibe of this group with an upbeat tempo and catchy lyrics. Some songs have more unique sounds to them, such as “How Low (Breakdown)”. The lyrics of this song delve in the realm of relationships that don’t quite work out, and how low people go just to stay in them. The melody of “How Low” on the other hand works out brilliantly; it’s upbeat and cool. You’ll be humming it all day. You might even find yourself taking a detour home just to hear it one more time. Another song worthy of being kept on “repeat” is called “Cut”. It’s a slower song that opens with a powerful drum beat (a mere measure) before the vocals come in harmoniously after with sultry emphasis, “The light is breaking through the window/ We count the miles/ Do you hum to static in your own life? / Or the radio?” “All the World Tonight” is the last track on the album, but by far the most distinctive. With a musical tone slightly reminiscent of R.E.M, this song is enrapturing. It will make you stop and think about your life from a new perspective with the lyrics, “ I’m looking off in the distance beyond the neon lights/ I can see all the world tonight/ all of the memories are locked away/ soon someday you’ll take ‘em down” Most of the songs on the album are, according to the band, “a series of love and loss notes from the road.” With all the songs about love and life, this group is—as hard as it is to admit-- definitely borderline “emo” (emotional). Luckily, they have a fresh sound that distinguishes them from the cliché genre and keeps them rock. Graham Colton Band is more than just another new group. They write genuine tunes; songs that anyone can relate to and everyone can dig. Kelly Clarkson tours with them, producers want Graham Colton’s music to enhance their popular shows. Why not consider adding their music to the soundtrack of your life?
