Customer Reviews
So glad this is finally out!
I originally wanted to write something really in-depth here, but you know what? I'm not technically qualified to talk about music in-depth that way.
So I'm just going to say this: this soundtrack is everything I love about this movie. Fun and quirky, snarky but surprisingly sweet, and that goes equally for Jonathan Dinerstein's instrumental score and Dan Bern and Common Rotation's vocal tracks. (The bonus tracks are a lot of fun that way, too, and really capture the spirit of the film.) There's a lot of character to this soundtrack -- definitely a highly enjoyable listen.
Oh -- and it's a pretty good soundtrack to a long day of, well, being an office drone. Makes the day go a little more pleasantly. :)
A captivating score
Even without having seen the movie, I really enjoyed the soundtrack - the work here is a sinister cousin to the kinds of ambient or soothing tunes you'd hear in a workplace. Listening to the score all the way through piqued my desire to watch the film! Each song is able to convey some emotional developments and evokes a little tension in the listener - an appreciation of the beauty of the pieces along with curiousity about the sinister edge that repeatedly surface. There is evident skill in the composition, and, while I am only a rank amateur, I had fun trying to pick out certain influences as I went along. It's an appealing listen. I asked a colleague for an opinion, and she offered: "It's like listening to a Tim Burton movie without images" - which may overweight the sinister, but certainly conveys the delight!
rich, playful, and well-orchestrated
I loved the dry, quirky humor of this movie, and the soundtrack captures this so well. But it's also surprisingly beautiful and satisfying to listen to on its own. I especially love the colorfulness of Dinerstein's orchestrations, which combine the luscious sweep of Bernard Hermann with the playfulness of Danny Elfman. Beautiful playing by all of the instrumentalists. I keep listening to this soundtrack over and over again, and recommend it very highly both for fans of the movie and fans generally of rich, colorful, well-orchestrated film music.
