iTunes Review

Yes, the Starlight Mints are geographic neighbors of the Flaming Lips, but about the only thing the two bands share, really, is a fondness for mind-bending lyrics. Where the Lips thrive in a black- light haze of lysergic weirdness, the Mints are more ... minty. Like a brisk, spring breeze, their songs crackle and pop with a youthful, fresh energy, and an almost naïve insouciance. Eschewing the trap of falling neatly into one indie pop genre, their brand of music is for those with larger appetites, who want a taste of it all: brassy horns ride atop elephantine beats, fuzzy synth lines, and Allan Vest’s squirrelly falsetto on “Pumpkin;” the ‘60s spirit of Village Green-era Kinks drives the sunny “Torts” and the melancholy “Sidewalk;” and the spidery, string-driven instrumental “Rhino Stomp” and the melodramatic title track showcase a flair for cinematic vision. But guitars chomp and jab on “Pearls” and “The Bee,” in fairly straightforward indie rock fashion, and the stellar “Inside of Me” blends pianos, strings, and tremeloed guitars into a perfect pop nugget, to be found alongside the best tracks by bands like Spoon, the Shins and Apples In Stereo.

Amazing!

I LOVE starlight mints! An album mixed with pretty songs to cool beats. Very refreshing and original. I just wish iTunes would put some of their other stuff up!

Upbeat, Fun and Unique

Starlight Mints is quite possibly my absolute favorite band. Their music is upbeat and catchy. And my favorite thing about Starlight Mints is that every song has it's own sound. Each song manages to sound different from every other yet still flow wonderfully into one another. "Drowaton" is their third album, though you really couldn't tell from here as iTunes doesn't seem to offer their first two, "The Dream That Stuff Was Made Of" and "Built on Squares". I often listen to all three shuffled together as the Mints stay true to themselves throughout all of their albums so they all mix together beautifully. "Drowaton" has such variety and spunk, listening to it is a joy. Their use of strings in many of thier songs just sends shivers down my spine, I'm kinda of a sucker of mixing genres such as what they do with rock and classical. If you are a fan of Modest Mouse, Cake, OK Go, Beck, Flaming Lips, or The Pixies, I highly recommend checking them out. They are definitely worth a listen.

Completely Original

This is an amazing album, it's very unique. I don't even know who to compare them to, just an all out great alternative album. There is not a boring or uncreative spot on this entire album, anyone who enjoys creative music whatever it may be should check them out.

Years Active: '00s

Candy-coated mod quintet the Starlight Mints sprouted through the ground in Norman, OK — the same home state as the equally oddball dream pop band Flaming Lips. Starlight Mints — vocalist/guitarist Allan Vest, keyboardist Marian Love Nunez, bassist Javier Gonzales, drummer Andy Nunez, and guitarist Matt Goad — began jamming together in the '90s as a seven-person band complete with orchestra, giving birth to their own funky brand of heavily instrumental — think cello, violin,...
