iTunes Review
For its fifth studio album, Georgia’s Mastodon refines its attack, replacing epics of more than 10 minutes with tunes that put it together in no more than five and change. Tracks like “Curl of the Burl” and “Stargasm” have an accessibility that’s recently been largely absent. The intricate guitar work of “Octopus Has No Friends” heightens Brann Dailor’s ambitious, jazz-like drumming. Dailor’s actually the secret weapon here, adding his unpredictable patterns to songs until they walk off on their own. “All the Heavy Lifting” could be a standard-issue tune if not for Dailor bringing the apocalypse. Astral meditation underscores “The Hunter.” Black Sabbath inspires the tribal/stoner vibe of “Creature Lives.” Neurosis singer/guitarist Scott Kelly joins the group for the pummel of “Spectrelight.” These aren’t the same old stoner riffs but reinventions of sound from a band that’s found an edge and persona all its own. The album’s deluxe version features two notable bonus tracks, “The Ruiner” and “Deathbound,” which are as heavy as anything the band has recorded. Essential listening for all Mastodonians.
Customer Reviews
Mastodon is The Hunter, and we are the prey.
Mastodon have managed to blanket rock, metal, hillbilly bluegrass, and both a hilarious and contextual perception of the world with, "The Hunter."
In past albums the vocals have been the achilles heel, though they definitively become The Hunter's Excaliber. The choruses on this album are what make it a must buy, and give the album potential for Mastodon's first grammy nomination.
Highlights are Blasteroid, Stargasm, Octopus has No Friends, The Hunter, and The Sparrow- really everything is a highlight, these songs are just bold, highlighted, italicized, blown up, and laser printed.
This album pushes boundaries not only for Mastodon, but for rock music in general. "Creature Lives" is likely the most controversial piece on the album, and takes a leap as profound as when John Denver turned country. This gorgeous miniature fairy tale gives the finger to expectations, and shows that the band will hone any inspiration that wafts through their refreshingly deranged perspective.
Mastodon's "The Hunter" goes beyond music. It is a separation from normality, and proof that the human soul exists.
SOOO disappointing....
Mastodon, what is wrong with you?? How can you allow this to be released to the public?? They're supposed to be a progressive band?? Well they have progressively gotten worse through the years. They get softer and softer with each release. Blood Mountain was by far their best and most mature release, but I want something harking back to Remission. Now THAT was a Mastodon album!!! They need to release another album equivalent to the rawness shown on that album. Very disappointing, Mastodon. VERY dissappointing....
I love this band.
I love how fresh Mastodon manages to stay.
