Album Review

Over the years, the singing of the world famous qawwal Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan has become a canvas on which a wide variety of admiring musicians and producers have painted their own musical images — guitarist Michael Brook recorded an album with him, and Khan's work has been remixed by everyone from Black Star Liner to Asian Dub Foundation. The latest celebrant in the Church of Nusrat is the brilliant electro-dub artist Gaudi, whose aptly titled Dub Qawwali takes rare and previously undiscovered vocal recordings of Khan from the '60s and '70s and embeds them in completely new instrumental settings, all of them based on varying styles of reggae, and all of them mixed in a rich, warm dubwise style. The album's high point is its lead track, the softly beautiful "Bethe Bethe Kese Kese." Here Khan is in relatively restrained mode, tenderly crooning a simple melody and avoiding the virtuosic flights of melisma that characterize his more up-tempo work. Gaudi's accompaniment is similarly gentle and caressing. On "Tera Jana Kere Rang Lawe" the melody is drier and the bassline busier; "Dil Da Rog Mka Ja Mahi" benefits from a wet, spacy sound similar to what you might have heard if Lee "Scratch" Perry had moved his Black Ark studio to Mumbai; "Kahin Mot Se Bhi Na Jao" is built on a rockers beat and a sturdily chugging organ part. But on every track, the star of the show is Khan's gorgeous, powerful, and plaintive voice — this album is ultimately a labor of love and a tribute to the memory of one of the finest singers who ever lived.

Good alternate takes

This kind of music-quawwalli-is deeply, deeply religious music. Qawwalli musicians approached music the way Bach approached music-with a deep religious piety and respect. Qawwalli tracks are usually long-15 minutes or so. It is nice to hear condensed version of such songs, it makes it quicker to get into the flow on this disc. Evenso, I wish there was a translation of what Khan was singing about. Kahin Mot Se Bhi Na Jao is my favorite track.

Excellent Mix

I had first heard a snippet of this album on the radio. I think NPR was conducting an interview with Gaudi and they played an album sample. I was immediately intrigued at the sound and could tell it would be something I would enjoy. I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but the samples on iTunes were enough to lead me to buy the album. After buying it, I can definitely say that I am satisfied and that I enjoy the album. I don't understand the lyrics, but you don't have to in order to appreciate the music. It's a great album to relax to and the reggae beats help to make it a great album to drive around with. I definitely would recommend it to anyone interested in reggae or world music.

Delicious as Starbuck's Java Chip Ice Cream

Nusrat has been in my ear for around 20 years now. I even have a teddy bear named after him. I have enjoyed his 20 min qawwali song/prayers in their original versions and contexts but need to be in the right mood for them. His voice and song structures are extremely amenable to mixes which are much more accessible for friends. And there have been the good (Michael Nyman and Massive Attack). But this album is the best of all of them. It is clear that Gaudi has taken a lot of time before committing a specific beat or ambiance to a Nusrat song. His molding of a qawwali song section around a reggae or dub beat is especially sexy. I believe this has come about through an equal amount of hard work and inspiration (rather like McCartney's fine-tuning of Sgt Pepper) and this adds a perfection to his work and a reverence to the original. This is a really really lovely piece of work which will keep Nusrat in our ears for decades.
