iTunes Review

To understand the sun-bleached back-to-school vibe of Matthew Mondanile's Ducktails project, you might want to skip to the eighth track on his self-titled album. Delivered through a thin veneer of tape hiss and off-key vocals, "The Mall" is a willfully awkward reminder of afternoons spent fantasizing about girls in food courts, town parks, and long stretches of surf and sand. Kinda like The Wonder Years if it were set a couple of decades later and had a Pavement track as its theme song instead of a Joe Cocker tune. That said, Ducktails isn't indebted to the pillars of indie rock so much as dusty shades of drone, psych and experimental electronic music. All of this run through a hazy filter that gives off several hard-to-pin moments of revelation, from the ambient science-class arc of "Horizon" to the lo-fi Fripp & Eno-isms of "Surf's Up."

It's like walking down a Northeast Boardwalk on a foggy night, with the neon blotching and pulsating out of the haze.
People float past as silhouettes, disappearing as You notice them.
The sound of your footsteps keeps time as the ocean's waves carry this chilly, comforting music through the heavy air.
A moment in time. Gone by, NOW... Forever.
When I listen to this, I never feel like I've heard it before.

Ducktails is the solo side project of Matthew Mondanile, a member of Ridgewood, NJ-based indie beach bums Real Estate. While not too dissimilar in tone from the sun-kissed pop of his main squeeze, Mondanile's work as Ducktails presents a more fragmented, mercurial version of the Garden State of mind. More synthetic, too, than Real Estate, Ducktails is all burbling analog synths, bedroom processing, and sunburnt soundscapes. The end effect acts as a sort of bleary aural Polaroid taken at a backyard...
