1960’s British pop sensation Dusty Springfield signed to Atlantic Records in 1968 and was immediately shipped to Memphis to record with Aretha Franklin’s production team — Jerry Wexler, Tom Dowd and Arif Mardin — and the ‘Memphis Cats’ session musicians who previously had backed Wilson Pickett and Elvis Presley. The resulting album, Dusty in Memphis has become an undisputed classic of eclectic styles — R&B (“Son of a Preacher Man”), Gerry Goffin and Carole King Brill Building Pop (“No Easy Way Down,” “Don’t Forget About Me”), sophisticated adult-contemporary from Burt Bacharach and Hal David (“In the Land of Make Believe”) and two from then emerging song stylist Randy Newman (“I Don’t Want to Hear It Anymore,” “Just One Smile”) — all melted into a cohesive whole by a singer who could sing anything and make it soul music. Though not a commercial smash at the time of its release in 1969, the album has gone on to become a favorite among critics and musicians. Its consistent showings on essential album lists led to expanded versions that have added 14 tracks to the album’s original 11, including covers of Bread’s “Make It With You” and Carole King’s “You’ve Got a Friend” that further illustrate Springfield’s impeccable interpretive powers.

Not entirely Faithful
"Dusty in Memphis" IS certainly a great album (voted in as one of '100 Best', or 'one of 1000 to hear...'); "Son of a Preacher Man" is a classic Dusty R&B, but I'd have to balk at "Windmills of your Mind" - although Dusty was a Balladeer par excellence - being 'Memphis'... In fact this release is a 1999 Rhino Records remastered Deluxe Edition containing bonus tracks: These songs were from the intended Faithful (or "Longing") album produced by Jeff Barry that was shelved when its singles failed to chart ("I'll be Faithful"), probably for 1970+ release. This was the beginning of a bit of downward momentum for Dusty, and I think Atlantic/"...in Memphis" was unfortunately the start of it (Let's take this great soul/r&b white UK singer and put her with the very artists, producers, writers, idols, in an alien environment and it'll be great... Dusty, due to either perfectionism or discomfort basically sang nothing in Memphis and the vocal tracks, as released, were recorded in New York later). I wouldn't want to put such a great testament down, but personally I'd choose some of the 'Greatest...' collections or at least select the first 11 tracks which are really the original album listing.
Top Ten of All Time
This has to be one of the Top Ten albums of all time. It was an r&b masterpiece in it's day, but was commercially not as sucessful as it should have been. It wasn't really until after it's time that it gained the respect that it deserves. The album is beautifully produced and holds up after all these years. This expanded version gives you an additional album's worth of material. Highly, highly recommended.
Classic perfection
This recording is absolutely astonishing. Basically overlooked at its initial release, this album has earned a following in the many years since it's conception. Each track sizzles with hot Memphis soul production, and you can hear the passion in each note Springfield sings. While listening to this album, you can easily imagine Aretha Franklin giving her nod of approval. Definitely check it out. A timeless classic.
