Don't pass this up

Drew Nelson is one of the best singer/songwriters I have heard in years. It takes a couple of listens to appreciate the poems that are wrapped in the music, but once you start to open up to the music you will be hooked. Not all the songs are in the same category, but raindance, grandmother moon and true and fine are or will be classics. These are some real gems.

Wonderfully tying together North American dreams and realities

Every so often, you encounter one of those albums whose songs speak beyond their allotted genre, while still managing to paint a collection of pictures so vivid that the listener hears characters and stories from inside his or her own life. This record, Nelson's third release, cements his writing and delivery as just that, a collection of cries and whispers across life that holds up remarkably well after many listens. Michael Cittenden's production is admirable, helping the songs achieve a stylistic and sonic identity far beyond the homogonized cliches of most modern "country" music; its songs are tempered with strong elements of roots rock and folk, yet evades any one category. When released in 2009, it quickly became a personal favorite of mine, and continues to wear well. This is no simple country album, nor is it one to be passed over.

Great Follow-up Album!

I first discovered Drew years ago when he and a friend stopped at a convenience store I was working at to re-stock for a fishing trip they were on. Drew's friend slipped me a copy of Immigrant Son, and I fell in love on the first listen. On a whim I checked out Drew's website today to see if he had released anything new, and was glad to discover he had. I dare say Dusty Road to Beulah Land tops Immigrant Son, which is no easy feat. Each song is its own unique story, set to wonderful instrumentation and told with a heartfelt voice. There's a good deal of variation between the songs on the album, so you never feel as if you're listening to the same thing again and again . . . or like you're listening to a carbon copy of Immigrant Son. If you're a fan of country and folk along the lines of Josh Ritter or the Avett Brothers, check this album out, you won't be disappointed!
