Wonderful
I cannot comment on the entire album, as I only bought Tchaikovsky's quartet. It is simply beautiful. As for the others: they are not the best renditions I have heard, but they are very close (For the 'American', I would recommend an album by the Cleveland Quartet).
A Must-Have
This CD contains three of the best Romantic period quartets, and they are played at the most superb level possible—the Emerson quartet is so good they're almost unreal. Dvorak's "American" lives up to all the hype, Tchaikovsky's early quartet foreshadows the genius to come in his later works, and Borodin's Quartet No. 2 is a pure embodiment of the composer's love for his wife. All three are beautiful, flowing, and possess truly wonderful characters. An essential edition to anyone's library.
Well...
I'm going to have to disagree, respectfully of course, with Nathan. The Dvorak quartet, No. 12, is performed at its best here in this offering. The interpretation by the Cleveland String Quartet is ADEQUATE at best. It lacks the vitality, clarity of point and sheer interpretive skill that the Emerson String Quartet has come to be known for time and time again. I own this CD and let me just say, you'd be doing yourself a disservice by NOT purchasing this album. (Especially the Dvorak....shame on you Nathan.)
