Album Review

A Christian progressive death metal band? Is there really such a thing? As evidenced by the sophomore release credited to Aletheian, Dying Vine, there sure is. The album was originally issued back in 2005 (after the group had issued several recordings under the Crutch moniker), but three years later it was reissued with the same exact track listing, in a remixed and remastered form (and with a new and improved front cover to boot!). From the aforementioned description, Dying Vine is an onslaught of metallic brutality, as the death metal guttural growls, razor-sharp high-tech riffs, and impeccable double bass drumming are seemingly nonstop. As with most death metal-esque bands, you'd never know what Aletheian have to say lyrically, as it's darn near impossible to decipher any of the prose without the aid of a lyric sheet (which, wisely, is included in the CD booklet). But despite the group's "Christian spin" on the genre, Aletheian sound like your average, ordinary death metal band, as evidenced by such ditties as "Paragon," "Out from the Shadows," and "The Dividing Line."

Customer Reviews

For fans of BTA, Dream Theater, Children of Bodom

This is a most artistic metal album. The counterbalance of clean and gritty vocals, blunt, grinding guitars and soaring, technical riffs, progression and heaviness. . .I imagine the new master is even better (this review is based upon the 2005 version, now well-digested). No hesitation if you value quality metal.

Not your ordinary Death Metal, at all.

The main review for the album is obviously written by an inexperienced metal-er. In no way is this your average metal release (remastered, re-release). The technical aspects, the dynamics of their playing are absolutley flawless, and the interweaved music theory incorporated into their sound is what truly leaves Aletheian ahead of the game. This isn't just power-chords and blast beats, but there is much Bartok-ish modern music theory imbedded into their melodic lines. I would recommend this album to fans of Emperor's legendary final release of their Prometheus album.

There's no such thing as too much Christian Death Metal!!!

This album is awesome!! I found this band in a Christian Death Metal vid on youtube along with many others, in my opinion, all of them were awesome! Luckily this one was on iTunes but others didn't show up. I hope I can find the rest!

Biography

Formed: 2003

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s

Proving that Pennsylvania Christian rockers can slay with as much brutality as the typical demon-worshiping Norwegian death metal group, Aletheian blend blistering prog chops, dual-guitar harmonies, and gutteral howls to make a savage albeit melodic brand of metal. Originally formed in 1997 under the name Crutch, they released a few albums independently and built up a fan base with the release of their third LP, Hope Prevails. With a lineup change in 2003, they changed their name to Aletheian, the...
