A Return To Form
On their first full-length album since 1981's "Living Eyes", the Bee Gees returned to the studio under a freshly-inked contract with Warner Brothers and the capable auspices of mentor/producer Arif Mardin. The result is somewhat of a mixed bag; laden with echo and excessive tinkering with synthesizers and drum machines. The Gibbs' sonic trademarks are mashed into a pre-programmed version of themselves, trying to make them sound as close to what was considered acceptable maintstream music in1987. But if nothing else, "E.S.P." reignited popular interest in the Bee Gees as a group and helped them to begin the process of brushing off at least a bit of their post-70s obscurity. Some of the stuff works; great pop records don't get much better than lead single "You Win Again", with its chunky, stomp-like rhythm and infectious chorus (which consequently had the desired chart-topping hit effect in almost every country in the world outside of North America). "The Longest Night" is as soulful and airy as most of its ballad predecessors, much thanks to Robin Gibb's pleading vocal. Most might find tracks like "This Is Your Life", "Crazy For Your Love" and "Backtafunk" cringeworthy; admittedly they are not representative of the Gibbs' masterful skills as songwriters and certainly are not on par with the epic "To Love Somebody" or "How Deep Is Your Love". However, every song on this record has at least a few moments where the Bee Gees manage to achieve greatness with their exquisite harmonies and penchant for melodic interplay. "E.S.P." might lack the intensity of their "Saturday Night Fever"-era material and the organic eccentricities of their earlier releases, but it is still a worthwhile reminder of why the Bee Gees survived for five decades and continue to hold a remarkable place in music history.
One of thier best!
This is a wonderful Bee Gees album! One of thier best!! They made this as a comeback album back in the late 80s. Some great songs are E.S.P, You Win Again, Giving Up the Ghost, beautiful song lead by Robin The Longest Night, Angela, and Backtafunk. Its a great buy and you won't regret it!
Great on a revisit.
Back in 1987 when this disk came out I purchased it. I set it aside as a poor comeback. Well now that I am at the end of the process of putting everything into my iPod, I am reviewing the ones I passed up because I thought I did not like them. Maybe I could pick up a song or two. I put E.S.P. completely in. My expectations were high and I missed the quality because the music was not what I expected. Sorry Bee Gees, I just did not get it the first time.
