iTunes Review
Eagles Live is melded together from several concerts recorded in October 1976, and July 1980. Don Henley and Glenn Frey mixed the album on opposite coasts, trading tapes through the mail. Unfortunately their excessive overdubs enabled them to recreate almost verbatim the studio versions of “New Kid In Town,” “I Can’t Tell You Why,” and “Saturday Night.” But you can still feel some of the energy of the Eagles live audience on “Desperado” and “Take It to the Limit,” two power ballads that can illuminate a stadium with raised lighters. The songs that fare best are the rockers led by Joe Walsh. The live setting gives him room to cut loose on “Hotel California,” “Heartache Tonight,” and “Life In the Fast Lane.” Oddly enough for an album that was intended as the Eagles’ farewell to its fans (it was posthumously released in November 1980, several months after the group’s breakup), the two highlights are “All Night Long” and “Life’s Been Good,” a pair of crunching tracks drawn from Walsh’s solo career.
