iTunes Review

A fast-rising producer/MC from the Bay Area, Kero One first emerged with the impressive 12-inch single "Check the Blueprints" in 2003, self-released on his own Plug Label. Awash in jazzy organ vamps, George Benson-smooth guitar riffs, and ultra-mellow drums, his debut full-length Windmills of the Soul followed shortly thereafter, further showcasing his gift for laid back grooves and low-key, down-to-earth rhymes. On Early Believers, he successfully avoids the sophomore slump, with another collection of easily digestible, earthy hip-hop overflowing with good vibes. The lead single "Welcome to the Bay" focuses on hometown pride, while "When the Sunshine Comes" (featuring Ben Westbeech) is classic storytelling rap, relating the tale of a girl, a guy, their love affair, breakup, her near death experience, and the inevitable reunion. Kero's perpetually chillaxed vocal approach is solid if a bit bland, but his production prowess (and that of co-conspirator King Most) is on point throughout, keeping things interesting by flirting with multiple genres, including Latin, electro, and "future soul."

The dopeness continues with 'Early Believers'

Kero One is a gift from God. His music touches my soul and makes each day a brighter, happier one, no matter what kind of s**t I'm facing. This album is a bit different from Windmills of the Soul, but HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. In 'Early Believers' you will find a bit more eclectic mix of musical styles, from the jazzy/funky hip-hop beats that drove Windmills, to a bossanova-based beat on 'Boss Soundcheck', to some R&B sounding stuff... There is a bit more singing (choruses) here on some songs, but in contrast to the other review I just read, it does NOT make me feel like a sissy... on the contrary, I drive around wit my windows down bumpin this GLORIOUS music just as loud as I do with Windmills spinnin in my car. 'This Life Ain't Mine' is THE BEST SONG I HAVE EVER HEARD. It's more to do with the fact that I can see my own life outlined in that song than anything I think.... But Kero's amazing lyrics will make anyone feel this. Bottom line, yes, this album IS a bit different from Windmills of The Soul, but honestly what do you expect? People change and grow as life progresses, and Kero One is definitely human, although it's sometimes hard to imagine a human being laced up with the wisdom, knowledge, and LOVE this man encompasses. This album is the DOPENESS! Buy it now and give thanks to the Creator for the amazing gift of Kero One!!!! SUPPORT THIS AMAZING ARTIST!

A Breath of Fresh Air

Kero One impresses yet again with his sophomore LP, Early Believers. The sound is bright and upbeat, with Kero One displaying his versatility as an emcee and producer yet again. A bit of an evolution from Windmills of the Soul, but not a departure as to leave his early believers behind. Buy this record, and check out his other releases as well - he recently nabbed a highly coveted spot on Mark Farina's Mushroom Jazz 6 compilation. 5 stars nothing less!

This album has exceeded my expectations for sure. I was a huge fan of windmills and was curious to what direction kero one would go with this new one. He definately outdid himself, keeping his soulful, jazzy foundation but updating with a bit of a more polished sound. Tracks like let's be friends, and keep pushin are certified bangers with uptempo beats and awesome singing. Tracks like Welcome to the bay and Stay on the grind are hiphop gems with lines like "wearin' so many hats that my hairs concave, producer, writer, rapper , ceo of plug labe". I can talk about it but you'll have to listen to the album yourself.
