Album Review

If Earth and Sun and Moon isn't Midnight Oil's best effort, it's certainly close. The band still sticks to themes that are close to its heart — the environment, native peoples, and other social causes — but rarely has it managed to fashion an album full of songs that are as musically intoxicating as on this 1993 release. "My Country" is full of jangling guitars and keyboards; the punchy title track has an infectious singalong harmony; and "Bushfire" adds some mean wah-wah guitar. The Oils managed to score some radio play on AOR and modern rock stations with the bracing "Truganini," the dramatic, piano-tinged rocker "Drums of Heaven," and the grinding shuffle of "Outbreak of Love." A satisfying release for longtime fans and new converts alike.

Fabulous album

The Oils, while evolving considerably in the soundscape that makes up this album, never sold out to pop sensibilities. After being together over four decades, their later work is as chillingly good as their early work. Definitely a band that ended while on top.

A Magnificent Rock Tutorial

Take Rock. Destroy it from whence it came. Refeel it, Rethink it, Recreate it, Repurpose it and Rework it until it's convictions can not be denied. From a Band and a Country unlike any other comes this music.

One of the best

This is, in my opinion, the best album that Midnight Oil has. Every song is catchy, every song is dripping with meaning and symbolism, and every song will insist on becoming your new favorite. The musicality is far greater than most pop bands could dream of - each song contains a completely different feel, different vibe, different chord progression, different rhythm, etc., making it possible to listen to this album over and over without getting bored. The lyrics smack of anti-establishmentism, pro-environmentalism, and anti-corruption (as all their albums do), while still giving a message of hope. A definite 'must-have' for all musicians.

Australia's Midnight Oil brought a new sense of political and social immediacy to pop music: not only did incendiary hits like "Beds Are Burning" and "Blue Sky Mine" bring global attention to the plight of, respectively, aboriginal settlers and impoverished workers, but the group also put its money where...
