Regarding the iTunes review... really? I mean... *really*?

Music critics get it all wrong. They focus on genre, technology, fads, history... all fine and dandy if you're writing an academic paper about something, but getting that intellectual about pop/rock is totally missing the point. Forget critiques of the style - who cares if it's jungle/trance/industrial/post-neo-modernist-grunge-fancypants-whatever? The only thing that matters in the end is: Did you like the songs? If you don't try to understand this album in the context of David Bowie's entire career or what else was Going On in the World at the time, you'll be in far better shape to *enjoy* it. Music like this isn't meant to be taken apart and examined atom by atom - pop/rock/etc. is about feeling and aesthetics. Did you *like* it? Was it... I don't know... pretty? All I know is that after watching a few performances of some of these songs on YouTube tonight, I was floored. Couldn't believe it. He owned the stage wherever he played. He made *Letterman* look like a great venue. If you can make a TV soundstage like that look cool, you're doing something right. I like the songs. I think they're pretty. That's all that matters.

Bowie delivers with this album. Every single song is incredibly unique and great to listen to. Nothing like old Bowie, but phenomenal. His guitarist is a genious. The guitar tracks are great to listen to. Short and Sweet review, i know, but i have never heard such a unique album besides NIN.

A bit overdone.

Actually the I-tunes review is pretty accurate. It does sound like Bowie songs with additional beats on top of the recording. It's not bad, and Bowie, like Madonna and U2, has always tried and experimented with different ways of recording his music. I would say this album probably would have been a little better without so much of the NIN drum beats which at times tend to overpower the songs and make them a little too busy. But it's by no means a bad album. In fact, "I'm Afraid of Americans" is one of his all-time best songs. And "The Last Thing You Should Do" and "Telling Lies" are additional pretty strong cuts. Usually true Bowie fans find his music interesting regardless what "period" of music he is writing in. This is no exception.
