Not So Chill
by
Steve Brand
A masterful album, but a departure from previous Solar Fields efforts (not in itself a bad thing). "Earthshine" is still Solar Fields with beautiful organic textures here and there, but the beats are more predominant, in-your-face, dance floor beats. Less subtlety, less chill, less atmosphere. This is rave material. That said, Solar Fields is Solar Fields, and I would listen to this before some of the less skilled eletronica practitioners out there. If you're a chill fan, listen before you buy.
The perfect follow up…

When finding the words to describe Solar Fields new album words like powerful, sublet, but most of all unique. Solar Fields is heading in new directions with this album; coming off of a dynamic album that was Leaving Home, Solar Fields, instead of repeating past efforts, this is a progression musical and I the genre of Trance. While it does fall in to the typical trappings of the Trace genre it still stands a pinnacle of excellence. Expanding on forms and melodies are just some of the progressions you will find on EartShine. Songs like Black Arrow are prime examples of this, in fact in this song even changes it rhythmic feel in its climax. Again it true Solar Fields style all of this is done subtly even to the point where you are pulled into the atmosphere creating a truly beautiful experience.
This is the perfect follow up; moving in new directions EarthShine will not disappoint any fan of Solar Fields and will satisfy any lover of Trance (And will be exposing them to new musical ideas).
Already being call ‘The Best Trance Album of 2007’ by some (myself included) EarthShine is a masterpiece, not only of Trance but of Electronic music as a whole.
You will not be disappointed…
Spin it, hear it, live it and it will change you...

The continuity and contrast of this album is amazing--starting with the cover.
The cover is a fine balance of light and dark with a building eclipsing the sun as a focal point--the richly dark music within reflects this very well. It is not hard to listen to this album and imagine a dark dance floor bathed in lights and smoke being massaged by throbbing speakers. The mixing of this album is just right; the pumping basses are never eclipsed by the great arpeggios and melodies. The musical Compositions themselves are rich in ambience and hypnotic bass and 303 lines and are all very strong ambient Progressive Trance. It is easy to get lost in this album especially in "Brainbow" which like it name suggests bathes your brain in rich colors flashing through darkness. There is not a bad track or even a mediocre one in the set. With "EarthShine" Solar Fields really captures the essence of Trance. As a fellow Electronic producer and composer let me just say, this album is essential in any Trance collection--Wintermute
