Album Review
The first Tower of Power album, when the band was only honing its concept and seeking a lead singer. On some songs, notably "Sparkling in the Sand," you can hear the group beginning to come together. They already had a fine horn section, and were only some good arrangements away from becoming one of the best pop and soul bands in the nation. The vocals were uneven, although Rick Stevens would later emerge as the prime vocalist. Despite its flaws, it's worth having because the diamond was being cut on these selections. It's recently been reissued on CD.

All the power with none of the polish
If you love TOP as much as I do, there's no such thing as a bad Tower of Power album. That being said, East Grease Bay is only for people who are already big fans of the band. Rufus miller has a good voice, but should have learned how to control himself. Though it certainly has the volume and punchy horn section of their later albums, it lacks the polish and control of them. If you're a big fan who wants to hear the group when they were still learning, East Grease Bay is worth your time and money. But if you're a first time listener, it's better to go with the Lenny Williams era issues, as well as their brilliant 1999 live album, Soul Vaccination: Tower of Power Live.
Tower of Power is the TOPs!
One of the BEST R&B/Funk bands of the 70's. This is one of my favorite TOP albums. "Sparkling In the Sand" remains my best "old school" slow jam. A must-have if you are a TOP fan.
East Bay Grease
I've been watching & waiting for this album, so glad you finally have it available. It's the best of the East Bay music of the 70's. But um, the album title is East Bay Grease, not East Grease Bay. From a former East Bay resident.
