iTunes Review

"A beat group," occasional Squeeze keyboardist Paul Carrack once described them. East Side Story took their post-British Invasion sensibility down eclectic paths that led them, if not to their own Revolver, at least something like their Imperial Bedroom. (Pal Elvis Costello produced all but one of the 14 tracks here.) The most famous song would be "Tempted," which musically puns on the Motown heroes by way of lines traded among Carrack, guitarist Glenn Tilbrook and Costello himself. Elsewhere, Tilbrook matches lyricist Chris Difford's trademark home-sour-home stories with evocations of the Zombies, rockabilly, Booker T. and the MGs and anything else that tickles his fancy. "Every hook she catches," Tilbrook sings of a radio-tuned housewife in "Woman's World." She would like this album, too.

This is what a Modern Classic sounds like.

Years from now, along side the Beatles' work, this album will be held up as an illustration of what bright, perfect pop sounded like at the end of the 20th Century.

From lyrics to melodies to musical execution, this album has it all.

If you don't already have this one...buy it right now. And enjoy it for the rest of your life.

A Best Buy

Not exactly my favorite album by this group (that honor would go to Argy-Bargy), but this ranks right up there. It's all over the musical spectrum, and sounds as great today as it did nearly 20 years ago. It has some awesome pop (In Quintessence, Is That Love), blue-eyed soul (Tempted), country (Labelled With Love), chamber music (Vanity Fair), rockabilly (Messed Around), and rock (F-Hole, Heaven). One of my favorite songs is Woman's World (still gives me goosebumps). Yeah, it's not exactly my favorite, but it's a classic. Hopefully, iTunes can acquire the other albums they recorded in their prime, before the Singles- 45's and Under album was released. Buy this one now, and you'll understand why you need to have the rest of their catalog in your collection. This is a can't miss album.

British pop at it's best

As far as I'm concerened this band was the best thing to come out of the exploding late 70's scene.
Better than Costello, The Clash, The Police, Joe Jackson...etc. They are all great, but not as great as this bunch of geezers.

This is probably the best LP of theirs. Not by much, they have made a few great LP's, but still their most eclectic, and most melodic.

Labelled With Love is the most enjoyable country tune by an English band that you will ever hear. Squeeze really cover almost any genre of rock/pop that us rock kids like.

The best LP by the best writing duo of that period, period

As one of the most traditional pop bands of the new wave, Squeeze provided one of the links between classic British guitar pop and post-punk. Inspired heavily by the Beatles and the Kinks, Squeeze was the vehicle for the songwriting of Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook, who were hailed as the heirs to...
