iTunes Review

A former member of Cibo Matto, Miho Hatori has also collaborated with Smokey Hormel on two albums, and has been on recordings by the Beastie Boys, Gorillaz, Spoon, Mitchell Froom, John Zorn, and others. Her talents and tastes are broad and deep, and Ecdysis, her first solo release, is a sparkling synthesis of sounds and styles reflecting these various interests. Self-produced by the multi-talented Hatori (she also sings in Japanese and English and plays several instruments), the album is a funky, intriguing, and sonically rich work that intertwines electronic loops, bossa nova rhythms, and her dreamy vocals, then floats them atop a dizzying and delightful mix of global percussion. The highlights are many, including the irresistible keyboard hook of “Barracuda,” the infectious groove of “Sweet Samsara (Pt. 2),” the samba-soaked “Today Is Like That,” the catchy chorus of “The River of 3 Crossings,” and the way her sweetly versatile voice soars, hiccups, and coos out her evocative lyrics. Imaginative and stylish, Ecdysis is a memorable collection of cleverly structured pop gems.

ethereal beauty and voice, a modern day siren

I recently saw her at the japan society. The way she engaged the crowd was magical. her voice is captivating, angelic and her music is multifaceted, drawing from latin, brazil, bits of punk and electronic. I applaud her work and look forward to the next album!! Keep it up Miho, My wife and I are fans forever!

ok, i listened to it again...it's still bjork

i didn't say I did or didn't like it... I just said it was bjork. And I'm not going to tell anyone to buy it or not buy it. Twirl around in the backyard for all I care...it's your money. ...and it's bjork.

Lose your expectations

If you're looking for the most brilliant album ever written, you'll never be satisfied with anything, so give it up. However, if you're looking for a pleasant, experimental, and fresh sound, here it is. Miho's doing what she loves best, playing with sound. Her contributions to Cibo Matto were playfulness and curiosity in a voice not afraid to take sonic and melodic risks. This album is a continuation of that playfulness. If you enjoy songwriters who use their voice as an instrument, you'll appreciate this album. Miho's voice has a gorgeous tone and her harmonies are very pleasing to the ear that appreciates dissonance. Since electronic music is still a relatively new genre, there will always be inexperienced listeners who will compare musicians because they have yet to discern the nuances of this type of songwriting. Never mind. Make your own decisions.
