Album Review
Vance Gilbert is no average folk singer. His Edgewise is on equally sure footing, whether he is rejuvenating a hoary Eagles song ("Lying Eyes"), melding country and rap, or singing love songs of either the tender or tortured variety. Presided over by the smooth production of Alain Mallet, which anchors the album in some places with percolating percussion and in others with jazzy guitars (on one song provided by Tuck Andress) and soaring background vocals (by Patti Cathcart and Jonatha Brooke), Gilbert's songs address racism, growing older and the fires (of joy and despair) that burn beneath the calm faces strangers wear for one another. He is a storyteller of the first order, and Edgewise is a gem.
Customer Reviews
Goosebumps!
I actually saw Mr. Gilbert in Columbus, Ohio where he was the opening act for George Carlin. Carlin was hilarious and so was Mr. Gilbert. And, oh yeah...Gilbert's got a great set of pipes on him!! Great singer!
Folk at its best!
This album is so much fun! "Jimmy" talks of that friend that only comes around when he is between loves. "Country Western Rap" is a knee-slapper! And I love the sound of his voice as he sings "King of Rome". I think that he is really a fun singer. Enjoy!
A slice of joy, a touch of heartache
Gilbert captures the essence of life's small moments, using a powerful and persuasive voice to paint a joyful and often moving picture.
