Album Review

Dredg is one of those rare bands who truly cannot be categorized. Gavin Hayes' vocals cascade like a waterfall over a sea of scratching Latin rhythms, dulcimers, guitars in odd time signatures, and prog rock-inspired drums. Hayes shares his penchant for Bulgarian chants in "Triangle" and "Same Ol' Road." "Whoa Is Me" could provide the soundtrack to all things haunted. Whether it's a piano and strings or Cure-influenced (specifically the Cure's "Fascination Street") guitars, instruments fill the time between songs on El Cielo. They offer a respite from the monotony and the slow-fast-slow style of songwriting. In an odd moment at the end of "Whoa Is Me," a soft-spoken public radio DJ speaks of a jazz number from 1944. The full-throttle rocker "It Only Took a Day" is one of the highlights. El Cielo is unlikely to become a hit on commercial radio, but perhaps Dredg could find their niche on college stations.

dredg's best

Well, yes, we all had mixed feelings on the new "Catch Without Arms." But here's a homebase you can always feel comfortable with. Every song on this album is individualistic, which is something missing from most music these days. However, the album flows so well (most tracks even flow together with no pause) dredg (as I said in the Catch... Review) brought me into a whole new world of music. I found this world more colorful. I remember the first time I listened to the album and after the choir-outro thinking: "wow, there can be this much meaning behind music?" I immediatly hopped on my computer and read up on some of the dredg sites. As it turns out, this album was about something more, something more than just girls and drugs and the usual. It's a long story, and you can check out all of it on a fan page (the 'new dredg' takes no interest in this art-rock jem any longer on the website.) The first song I actually heard was Same Ol' Road. I saw the video on some indie music video show; I was a fan of Tool (and the art style) at the time, so, naturally, I was hooked. I ordered the two albums at the time almost immediatly. When I gave the album a listen for the first time, I could immediatly make connections and found each track mesmerizing. I swore that I had heard Sanzen somewhere before... Either that, or I was thinking "somebody has to have thought of this before... It's incredible!" I was slower to pick up on a few tracks, but El Cielo truly gets better with each listen. Ok, the big picture. Do you want something artsy and new? Do you want something accessable and catchy? You want El Cielo. Trust me, this Album is worth every penny and more... Plus, if you illegally download it (I do this sort of thing a lot, mind you,) you won't get to see the album art, which adds to the experience. You know what? I rarely give an album five out of five stars... But there is no reason to abstain here... After being a fan for so long, and after all the memories of when I first got into dredg, here you go guys, you earned it -Five Stars

"...auditory hallucinations..."

This is without a doubt one of the best "rock" albums of this decade. This band eats, sleeps, and breathes art and "El Cielo" shows that. The theme of the album is based on the concept of sleep paralysis as well as the painting "Dream caused by the flight of a bee..." by Salvador Dalí. If you appreciate art and creativity in music... any kind of music... then it is likely you will love dredg and their masterpiece, "El Cielo."

Amazing album by an amazing band

hauntingly beautiful stuff that is even better than the exellent "Leitmotif". A good mix of harder hitting rock and lighter, spiritual creations that blend to form a nearly perfect album.

Biography

Formed: 1993 in Santa Cruz, CA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Hailing from Los Gatos, CA, Dredg began sharpening their aggro-metal sound in the early '90s. Comprised of Gavin Hayes (vocals/guitar), Mark Engles (guitar), Drew Roulette (bass), and Dino Campanella (drums), the group was performing in area clubs before they'd even graduated from high school. Dredg self-released the Orph EP in 1997. The ambitious Leitmotif followed two years late, and it was reissued with the band's 2001 signing to Interscope. El Cielo, Dredg's proper Interscope debut, arrived in...
