iTunes Review
The Wedding Present’s David Gedge relocated to West Hollywood and reconnected with Chicago sound engineer Steve Albini (who last recorded the band’s 1991 album Seamonsters) for 2008’s El Rey, and both influences are readily apparent. The Leeds, UK native Gedge has taken Los Angeles to heart with tunes such as “Santa Ana Winds,” “Spider Man on Hollywood,” “Model, Actress, Whatever…,” and “Swingers” that reflect his newfound home in their lyrical concerns and in the positive vibrations of their relatively sunny melodies. Albini’s touches are sonic, and, as expected, darker. The twin guitars of Gedge and Chris McConville are kept raw and dirty with drummer Graeme Ramsay highlighted as a strong pulverizing accent, giving these “pop” songs a nasty, aggressive edge. “Soup” is a curious throwback to the “soup nazi” episode of Seinfeld that makes one wonder which decade Gedge has slept through. Gedge is hardly an old re-run himself; the percolating build of “The Trouble With Men” showcases a knack for multi-hued drama where the gray areas turn sepia-toned and his vocals evoke a desperate weariness. It’s these paradoxes that make for intrigue.

A Masterpiece
I will admit I was disappointed with Take Fountain. As great as it was to see a new Wedding Present album after so many years, it was really nothing more than the fourth Cinerama album and an uninspired one at that. That being said, the expectations for El Ray were reserved at best. The pleasant suprise comes during the first track where the urgency is back in Gedge's voice and and the guitar sound in the top of the mix leaves no mistake that Mr. Albini is back at the helm for the first time since 1991's epic Seamonsters. From there, the album sounds like a walk through their extensive catalog with the jangling guitars of Bizzaro kicking off the second track and the dark themes of lust and jealosy resonating through standouts like Palisades and The Trouble with Men. The standout for me is Boo Boo with its gorgeous chorus and lyrics that can hold their own with anything that this ledgenday band have ever put to tape. All in all, a refreshing return to form and a record that is hopefully indicitive of things to come..
Back to their best!
Not heard Dave Gedge growl like this since "Seamonsters". The production is perfect (sounds as though it was recorded in a garage - really stripped down), the lyrics are sharp, witty and honest, and the "jangle" is back in the guitars. Cinerama was a fun diversion, but they are finally back musically where they belong. I can now finally prove to my friends what a great band they really are!
EPIC
An instant classic. As good as their best (Bizarro and Seamonsters). The engineering, for the first time, captures how they sound live - which is a good thing. DLG has finally achieved the perfect balance between what he was trying to do with Cinerama, and what TWP has always been, regardless of the lineup. Outstanding.
