Album Review
This Verve CD reissues the popular collaboration between vibraphonist Cal Tjader and pianist Eddie Palmieri (who provided the arrangements) titled El Sonido Nuevo: The New Soul Sound, along with six other songs taken from a pair of Tjader's other Verve albums. Despite the claims of greatness expressed in the liners ("a landmark in the history of Latin jazz"), much of the music is actually quite lightweight although enjoyable enough, and the easy listening melodies and accessible rhythms hold on to one's interest. Despite the changing personnel, Tjader is generally the lead voice, and he is in fine form even if the overall results are not all that memorable or unique. [El Sonido Nuevo was reissued in 2006 and includes bonus tracks.]

A Classic
Muy Bueno!, I recomend this CD to anyone who likes good music. This one is a classic. Bravo para Palmieri and Tjader. Especialmente Picadillo, and Guajira en Azul. It is a must have for jazz and salsa collectors.
El Sonido Nuevo
Not too long ago there was a man named Cal Tjader from the west coast who could muster up a great Latin Jazz sound that was unique yet enticing. Along came Eddie Palmieri the salsa great from the east coast and together the two giants melded to perform and produce this classic. A must listen too for all ears that enjoy Jazz and Salsa. Check out the magic they performed with Tito Puente's Picadillo, and the arrangements throughout the album.
