iTunes Review

Eels is essentially the artistic conceit of E, stage moniker of Virginian Mark Oliver Everett, a musician who seemed to split his youth between low-grade delinquency and the enchantment of four-track demos. While Beautiful Freak, Eels' 1996 major-label bow, was a Beck-ish slice of burnished alt-pop that gave E an MTV, this 1998 sophomore effort took a turn down darker musical avenues, likely spurred by the death of Everett's mother and sister in the interim. It's a deeply challenging personal work haunted by such troubling meditations on mortality as "Elizabeth On the Bathroom Floor," "Going to Your Funeral Pt.1," "Last Stop: This Town" and the spare, ethereal title track. Angular sonic Beck-isms still pop up, but now in service of one of the '90s most accomplished volumes of musical introspection.

Intense live set

The iTunes review above is incorrect; it's for the studio album "Electro Shock Blues." This is a live set recorded during that tour in Europe (mainly England) and the United States. Mostly comprising songs from the band's first two albums, it is a marvelous testament to the live beast that was eels on this particular tour. Highlights include the scatching version of "Cancer for the Cure," the desperation of "Going to Your Funeral Pt. 1" and the monster-rocking "Not Ready Yet." A great place to nonfans to sample the band.

If you like the eels

I saw the eels in concert while they were on tour promoting this album. You'll like this album if you can get into their music and appreciate "E" the lead singer. It's pretty dark...darker than beautiful freak with this poppy twist to some of it. You'd really have to be a fan to buy this.

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Although Eels are often marketed as a full-fledged band, singer/songwriter E (real name: Mark Oliver Everett) is responsible for the group's sound and direction. Born in Virginia on April 9, 1963, Everett became interested in rock music at an early age via his sister's record collection, and began playing drums at the age of six (as well as tinkering on his family's piano). As the years progressed, Everett began leading a troubled teenage life, which was further complicated by his father's death....
