Shift Of Direction
After a couple of Air-esque records Munich Syndrome gets its pop freek on with Electronic Ecstasy and hits the dancefloor. You know you aren't in chill Kansas anymore about 5 seconds into the first track, a pounding "I Feel Love" homage, which Munich Syndrome puts its own unique spin on. The first 2/3rds of the record strongly recalls Very-era Pet Shop Boys, with those regal chords propped up in the background. Which is kind of surprising because the previous two records barely posessed a hint of that particular sound & sentiment, but it's a pleasant surprise, becuase everything Munich Syndrome does here works! The sound on this record is often a lot fuller than on its predecessors, dramatically so on some tracks, like the wonderful "Always (Alone)", and the delightfully '80s-esque "Endings".
Munich Syndrome haven't entirely abandoned their more chill past - the last third of the record goes more downtempo and downbeat, although there aren't many instrumentals ("Metro", a lovely instrumental, is probably my favorite of this section) - but it's kind of a shock to hear them produce such an effective pop record, complete with some fairly lush vocodored harmonies. The album includes remixes of three of the best tracks on the record, which is a nice bonus.
Another Electronic Goldmine
Munich Syndrome once again provides us with very full (more than 75 minutes) album of electronic dance beats. This time the songs are more pop flavored and evoke the great electronic music of the 80s with a wide range of moods and ideas. And also this time we are treated to two versions each of three songs ("Electronic Ecstasy", "Always (Alone)", and "Anywhere (But Here)") so we are able to see even more of the range of this outstanding group. Another great offering from Munich Syndrome: we can only hope that the albums keep coming!
