iTunes Review
As a collection of b-sides and rarities spanning 1995 to 2007, Electronic Projects for Musicians makes for an interesting “alternate” route in what’s been an already offhand side trip of a career. Apples in Stereo specialize in subverting conventional ‘60s-styled pop songs with experimental recording techniques that make it seem as if they’re being transmitted from another galaxy. Take away the distant vocal echo, modify the crunchy guitar fuzz, and subdue the mechanical rhythm box beats and a track such as “So Far Away” wouldn’t seem so alien. It also wouldn’t be as much fun. Among the oddities featured: frontman Robert Schneider’s tribute to Stephen Colbert (“Stephen Stephen”), his own band’s personal manifesto (“The Apples Theme Song”), an odd folky throwaway (“Thank You Very Much”), other clever, brilliantly harmonized pop tunes (“Onto Something,” “On Your Own”) and a recently finished track (“Dreams”) that was originally intended for release ten years previous for the band’s second album Tone Soul Evolution.
Customer Reviews
give these guys a chance
Here we go again...people listening to three seconds of a band and then proclaiming it stinks because it doesn't sound like part of the mainstream. The recording is solid, the music whimsical and strange, hallucinagenic but concrete, the songs loose but coherent--jangly and melodic pop from a band that won't pander to tastes. People with an affinity for music left of center should give this a try.
Classic Apples
Just after a quick preliminary listen, it sounds as though this album is very much in keeping with The Apples in Stereo's evolving style. It kind of sounds like their last album had a love child with some Beatles records... I'll be interested to give it a more thorough listen. p.s. - See them live if you can. It's a completely different experience from listening to an album, and they really try to put on a good show.
I never write reviews...
... but I have to this time, due to the absurd reviews this has been getting. If you think Apples' sound is horrible and the recording on this album is awful, then you obviously are not an Apples' fan. This is typical Apples In Stereo. This is a great album, and is a great compliment to their last album. You should buy this and take the time to allow their sound to grow on you.
