Album Review

On Elemental, Tears for Fears is Roland Orzabal, and he backs away from the cinematic production of The Seeds of Love, preferring a more direct and soulful style of pop music that appeals to both adult contemporary and adult alternative radio audiences. While some of the material is a little weak, the record is easily as good as its immediate predecessor.

Stunning

I produce albums/commercials for a living and have for many years. This is one of the finest pop albums ever made. Probably not to the level of Sowing the Seeds of Love but pretty close. dave chicago

An evolutionary follow-up to The Seeds Of Love

I bought this album when it first came out in 1993 and (initially) I sorely missed the duo of Curt and Roland. Year after year I keep coming back to this album, to the great melodies and lyrics that encapsulate this release. It's one of my favorite TFF albums and contains one of my favorite songs, Goodnight Song. If you've never heard the album, take a listen and see what you are missing.

Perhaps the strongest TFF album

I admit to being underwhelmed when I first heard the post-Curt Smith Tears For Fears outing. For me, the tension between band mates typically leads to better work, though I acknowledge that, at least as far back as "The Seeds of Love" and perhaps also "Songs from the Big Chair," the partnership was very much skewed in favor of Roland Orzabal. That said, after a few listens, I found "Elemental" sustaining my interest much moreso than previous (and later) efforts. Each song is rich and resonant, and unlike previous efforts, not one is vocally self-indulgent or is a lyrical klunker. The first three songs charge out of the gate. "Cold" is my favorite song in the collection, capturing that feeling of not being able to relate (possibly a reflection of where Orzabal was at the time, relationship-wise) but wanting that connection. "Break It Down Again" was the natural single, but not quite as infectious as "Sowing the Seeds of Love" (nor as clearly Beatles-derived). Again, the sound and the content reflect a continuing evolution and maturity. Beyond that, I love "Gas Giants," a whisp of a song with a haunting melody and mysterious message, and "Goodnight Song," which always brings up the bittersweet feeling of saying goodbye to friends after a particularly good time.

Biography

Genre: Pop

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Tears for Fears were always more ambitious than the average synth pop group. From the beginning, the duo of Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith were tackling big subjects — their very name derived from Arthur Janov's primal scream therapy, and his theories were evident throughout their debut, The Hurting. Driven by catchy, infectious synth pop, The Hurting became a big hit in their native England, setting the stage for international stardom with their second album, 1985's Songs From the Big Chair....
