Elephant: A Risk Worth Taking

I don’t know much about music and how to make it, but I know what I like to listen to. This album is what is currently massaging the pain and beauty I am walking in internally. To me it is real, as much as that word is overused. Yelling, moans, whimpers, quivering voices emerge from some mysterious internal depth sometimes hidden by outer beauty. The pain and seriousness are haunting but often paired with more bearable beautiful strings, strumming, piano-ing and lightness – a successful balance. It feels unpretentious to me in communicating the weight of internal struggle. As much as I hate to compare, it is the only way to place things: Right Thru ‘s energy reminds me of an Irish jig and that song by Interference, Gold, which I happen to really like. In Babylon reminds me of Janov’s Primal Scream, which I recently read. One Twenty One & Blow Out the Wick remind me of Andrew Bird with intoxicating eastern sounds, and the lyrics are ones that my tongue has spoken. I like the beats of Blow Out the Wick & Won’t Stop; the latter is like electronic club music - Moby-ish - with crazy trumpets and organs - made me want to get up and dance. Some of the random beats and chaos of Melee & Won’t Stop makes me think of Anathallo. My Favorites (tap into some internal pain and glory): Fifty One, This Can’t Last, Won’t Stop, First Love. Music is sometimes folk-y, sometimes electronic, sometimes gospel, sometimes soft, but mostly just other and mostly just really honest. Effectively pulls so many different sounds together. In lyrics and sounds there is, for me, better access to my fear, longing, despair, sadness, skepticism – but weirdly all of that leaves me with hope. It was a risk for me to purchase seeing as I am only familiar with Aaron through ETWC, which is so different than this; I am thrilled at his expression of his experience and that it wasn’t a waste of what little money I have. Whether you believe in God or not, there is something more universal to the pain communicated here and the courage that it takes to recognize that you are sitting in the mud and yet find glory all around.

What you've been craving

Aaron Strumpel's Elephants is a CD worth your time. It is innovative, honest, heart stirring, and primal in a sense. It's safe to say there's not much out there like it...if anything at all. In a world where music is becoming so 'cookie cutter' and generic, Aaron's latest release screams out and stands out above the rest. You'll be glad you took the time to listen. One of my favorite tracks is 'Right Thru.'

Glimpses

This album truly is an expression of the kind of artistic excellence and beauty that gives us a glimpse of something more, something larger than ourselves. After listening to it you can't help but be inspired, perhaps even moved to create your own "something more." As for me--I think I'll turn up the volume and go dance around the kitchen with my 3-year-old...and watch his feet stomp in circles and his face beam.
