a must for guitar fans, and classical fans everywhere
I've followed Micheal's carreer with great interest once I heard the amazing 'Being In Dreaming' from a friend. Michael, in my world, is a musician first and a guitar player second. By that I mean that he's a guitar player that listens to the music that he creates, rather than simply moving his fingers. I feel as if Michael Hewett is Michael Hedges musical son, so, it is amazing to see such a proficient guitar player from another genre take on these classical pieces with such ease, conviction and beauty. The album is breathtaking. The pieces on this album are perfectly rendered, and give you that feeling, like all great art, of both, "I'd love to do that!" and "I could do that!" This album is an inspiration to guitar players everywhere that they don't have to stay in a box, and that they should dare to learn the depths of beauty that their instrument holds. Just amazing!
Serious Musical Skills
Michael Hewett is an extremely talented artist and a skilled technician on the guitar! If you have doubt, simply listen to the brilliant finger picking on his rendition of Leyenda (Track 2). He has been very successful in spanning several genres of music, including a New Age feel on "Being in Dreaming", and a total Rock vibe on "Ally". On this album, Michael expands his range even further by playing a beautiful medly of 11 classical pieces. I was first introduced to Michael's music by my teacher, and each album has been a new and exciting journey through the realms of phonic bliss. I highly recommend this album to any person who appreciates great musicianship!
Meditative, energetic, intricate...
Listening to La Catedral, I felt transported to some sheltered courtyard in the desert of Spain or southern Italy. The guitarwork is spare and graceful, seeming relaxed and unhurried even in the most intricate moments of the Fuga or Presto. I wish there were some liner notes - I recognize some of these pieces, but not all of them, and that makes me wonder if some are Michael's composition, and if not, where they came from.
