Elgar Enigma Variations and Symphonic Marches
Barry Tuckwell conducts the London Symphony in another of the LSO's fine series of live performancse. This effort is completely ok without really rising to the heights. The "Pomp and Circumstances" marches in particular are rather "peppy" where they ought to be grave. The deeply moving Enigma Variations are well-played, but not really insightful. It's difficult to say exactly what troubles me about these performances except that there are better versions of all the represented pieces. Perhaps Tuckwell's lack of long experience as a conductor (he is best known as a really great French horn soloist) impacts these readings. Whatever--there is nothing out of tune here--nothing really annoying--just often perfunctory performances that are good but not great.
Pretty Soon
I am very happy to say that pretty soon i will get to hear song no. 17 at my high school graduation this coming june. I'm too excited. When i get hear this song, i get to remember all my special high school memories. I can't wait! "Class of 2009"
I like the Pomp and Circumstance Marches
I like the fact that the pomp and circumstance marches are played faster. they are marches which are usually played fast. the only reason the slowed down was because the trios became more important than the work as a whole.
