Another Surprise
I am surprised no one has written a review as yet. The composer himself is a surprise to classical music circle. Elvis Costello rose to the challlenge and came up with this DIFFERENT piece of Mid-summer's night episode. MTT also did a great job. If you are not sure if you would like this type of orchestral music, try only the Puck One for 99 cents. (Track 3). It brings you mid summer's breeze, at least.
A delight...
Some might complain that pop stars venturing into classical music is a gimick or trite, but this attitude would reveal ignorance of the reality behind swooning fans tossing their affection (and even garters and breeches?) at Liszt: "pop" and "classical" have been two sides of one coin. Today, new classical wallows in ear-raking screeches of atonality. But not Elvis. More interesting than Sting's and Billy Joel's classical efforts (although these are both happy surprises!), these melodic and romantic pieces capture the odd Shakespearean sense of darkness under frivolity. That is, the music is serious without being ponderous (or, heaven forbid, preachy) and light without being flippantly pastoral. I certainly hope we hear more like Il Sogno from him--"When I Was Cruel" was classic Elvis, but classical Elvis is far more inspired...and inspiring.
A Talented Musician, to Say the Least
Elvis Costello has recorded classical, pop, country, traditional, jazz, and new wave. There's not a whole lot left! Then he married Diana Krall.
What a guy!
