The first 35 seconds of the opener “Shampoo” feature an acoustic guitar wrapped in feedback and unidentifiable hissing and stretching of strings before the drums and organ kick in. It’s a wonderful moment and the effect is delightfully disorientating. And that same sense of off-balance wonder stretches across the rest of this fine recording. The lyrical themes are often dark, but they are buoyed by lively melodies and clever arrangements. The horns are an especially supple touch on “Send My Fond Regards to Lonelyville” (where it sounds like a Dixieland band marched through the studio during the take), the excellent “Chains, Chains, Chains” and the joyous romp of “Doomsday.” Great use of pump organ, clarinet, harmonium, and upright bass all lend genuine warmth to the music. And Perkins’ emotive and unusual singing voice warbles, yelps, and trills for the just the right dramatic effect. This eponymous sophomore release is a real pleasure and one that signals a load of possibilities for this talented quartet.

I really liked his first album, it heads the top of my playlist, it grew on me and it is a nice wintery album. I liked it that much that I bought his new album blind. and then i thought: what the f**k? It is a travelling 19th century circus, a messy fanfare with loads of horns. the I listened to it a second time and a third and a fourth (it isn't an easy album to pry open) and then you realise what a true masterpiece it really is. Layer on layer of true originality. It makes most of this years new releases feel kind of bland. A very daring choice, not to be 'just' another singer songwriter, but to come out with such a daring masterpiece. where ash wednesday was winter, this is a burlesque enchanting summer evening. We will dance around the campfire and have massive laughs with friends

A Wonderful Discovery

I had never heard of Elvis Perkins (the son of the late Anthony Perkins of Psycho movie fame) until I turned on NPR this morning while driving to work. The interview and the music was fantastic. I was hooked by each snippet of the songs they played off the album. 123 Goodbye and Doomsday are powerful pieces of music. Elvis has a gift for musical storytelling.

Dearland

One of the most complete albums I've heard in years. As with "While You Were Sleeping" (his debut album) Elvis' lyrics are authentic and focus on some very real, frequently tragic experiences in his life. However there's something distinctly different about the new record. Accompanied by his aptly named band Dearland (which was not present on his last album) Elvis seems to have been lifted to a new place - both musically and emotionally. His ever reflective lyrics are joined by a more upbeat, positive sound, and the result is that the listener can't help but to be filled with a sense of optimism. I'm a big fan of this album.
