Album Review

Christmas on Mars might be the Flaming Lips' sci-fi epic, but Embryonic is the musical equivalent of 2001: A Space Odyssey's final scenes: transformative chaos resulting in a new start. Embryonic is the loudest the Lips have been in years, boasting a strangely liquid yet abrasive swirl of sounds. "Aquarius Sabotage" opens with fuzz bass and keyboards so chaotic, it isn't just free jazz, it's free-for-all jazz, albeit balanced by the vocodered loveliness of "The Impulse." Wayne Coyne often sounds like he's singing from another dimension, musing on humankind's frailty with the wonder of an alien or a newborn. Little about Embryonic is clear-cut or straightforward, but these very qualities make the album haunting and intriguing. [The album was also released with a bonus DVD.]

Eat Your Own Spaceship

Fresh off the soundtrack to Christmas on Mars, FLips are obviously on a bizarre electronic mindfreak binge. Any true fan will love it, and I must say this tantalzing sampler was worth my 4 dollars. Wayne Stays more true to his range in these three tracks than on the latest album (At War with the Mystics), though his voice is so heavily effects-ridden it's a task decoding the lyrics. In short, if you're a true Flaming Lips fan this purchase will be worth it to you. If you're not at least mildly die-hard, you may want to save your money for the full-length album.

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Even within the eclectic world of alternative rock, few bands were so brave, so frequently brilliant, and so deliciously weird as the Flaming Lips. From their beginnings as Oklahoma weirdos to their mid-'90s pop culture breakthrough to their status as one of the most respected groups of the 2000s, the Lips rode one of the more surreal and haphazard career trajectories in pop music. An acid-bubblegum band with as much affinity for sweet melodies as blistering noise assaults, their off-kilter...
