iTunes Review
Skip straight to “Somebody Made For Me” to understand why many refer to Emitt Rhodes as Hawthorne, CA’s own Paul McCartney. Though his music never garnered Sir Paul’s fame and wealth, Rhodes’ songs were just as good. “Mother Earth” from The American Dream opens with a whimsical, baroque-pop vestige from Rhodes’ former band the Merry-Go-Round. “Someone Died” and “The Man He Wants” are two more standouts from the same album, this time illustrating the man’s gift for spinning gold from the melancholy. The pedaling pop of “With My Face On the Floor” from his second solo album gave McCartney fans a glimpse of what life may have sounded like without Linda, while “Golden Child Of God” from 1971’s Mirror almost mirrors Paul and Linda’s Ram. “Warm Self Sacrifice” from 1973’s Welcome To Paradise finds Rhodes rocking out with a jaunty Nilsson vibe while the previously unreleased “Tame the Lion” is a wonderful unearthed gem. What’s more impressive than the quality of these songs is that Rhodes played every instrument sang every track and produced every one of these recordings in his home studio.

EMITT FINALLY ON ITUNES!
if anyone out there is a fan of good singing, songwriting & recording out there, they really ought to punce on this collection by emitt rhodes, a lonesome southern californian genius who has been away from the music scene too long. he had a promising start with the merry-go-round and was even covered by the fairport convention on their first record. then he made his masterpiece, the self-titled 'emitt rhodes', which is indeed beatlesque, but has a certain sad 'something' all it's own. the next record, 'mirror' is equally stunning and contains perhaps his finest song, "better side of life". if you love all the b's (big star. beatles, badfinger, beach boys) jump on it!
It's not just an album, it's a saga!
I remember when this album was released. I know, I know, I'm old. But at that time, Paul McCartney had disappointed almost everyone with his initial solo releases, and Emitt Rhodes seemed to be channelling beautifully the PM everyone was expecting and never showed up. There is a great and growing cult of people like me waiting almost 40 years for this album to be released on anything other than the original vinyl. Cassette, no. 8 Track, no. CD, no. Digital, yes! And I can count on one hand the vinyl I've waited that long to buy again. Simply because, this record is on almost everyone's list of the 60's 10 best albums even though it was almost completely ignored. And that's saying a lot. It was the 60's, man.
SHADES OF McCARTNEY AND EARLY BILLY JOEL
First of all, I am THRILLED that I-Tunes has released these recordings. I've been trying to find songs from the album, MIRROR, for years, now, with very little luck. Not only are all those songs here, but the rest of his early catalogue, as well. GREAT JOB, I-TUNES!!! As for Mr. Rhodes and the music, I am (as you might have guessed by now) a HUGE fan. Any fan of late Beatles/early McCartney solo/early Billy Joel should just play the following tracks: "Really Wanted You," "Somebody Made For Me," "Someone Died," "Birthday Lady" and "Lullabye" and you'll instantly become an Emitt Rhodes fan. Not only was this guy a terrific singer/songwriter, but, at least on the album MIRROR, a multi-instrumentalist, playing EVERYTHING on all the songs. I am now discovering songs on this collection I never heard before, and some of these are absolute gems, as well ("Trust Once More," "Bad Man," "Holly Park" etc). Great music, finally seeing the light of day after so many years buried and unavailable. Thank you, I-Tunes!!!!!!
