Album Review

Although he had made a number of re-recordings of popular songs for a budget record label in the late '60s, Empty Sky was the first true solo album Elton John recorded after leaving Bluesology; it also marked the beginning of his long and fruitful collaboration with lyricist Bernie Taupin. Empty Sky is quite indicative of the post-Sgt. Pepper's era. With its ambitious arrangements and lyrics, it's clear that John and Taupin intended the album to be a major statement. Though it shows some signs of John's R&B roots, most of the album alternates between vaguely psychedelic rock and burgeoning pop songcraft, capped off by a bizarre reprise of brief moments of all of the songs on the record. There aren't any forgotten gems on Empty Sky, but it does suggest John's potential. [The CD reissue includes the bonus tracks "Lady Samantha," "All Across the Havens," "It's Me That You Need," and "Just Like Strange Rain."]

Don't know what everyone else is talkin' about

Being an Elton fan for quite some time, for some reason I never got around to purchasing this album. However, despite the many negative reviews I've heard, it really is one of the best ones out there. Now, given, it is quite a bit different from some of John/Taupin's later work, but still excellent nevertheless. There is a definite 60's-esque feeling to the whole album. I recommend this album to any Elton fan, but even more so if you are a fan of the music of the late 60's.

Essential for any Elton John fan

Not to miss tracks: Empty Sky, Sails, Just Like Strange Rain. The harpsichord version of Skyline Pigeon is interesting, but not necessarily a must-have. This album features the terrific Caleb Quaye and Roger Pope, two musicians that Elton should have retained his entire career. Although this, Elton's first release, is not up to speed with his next three or four albums, it is an astonishing effort. Elton was making this music in the late 60's, folks. The emergence of brilliance.

Empty Sky

The bonus tracks alone make this album worthwhile, not to mention the excellent song "Empty Sky", an unheralded Elton John classic. Great work by the John/Taupin songwriting team, even with the somewhat ragged production. Download this now!
