Modern Comedy Hero
I'm a total comedy nerd and check out nearly every album without a blue collar, and this second CD from Eugene Mirman is really a standout peformance.I've already listened to it 4 times while commuting..He's got some funny real life stuff and some really hilarious abstract bits in here...Can I compare some of his stuff to Steve Martin? Even the bits that fall flat are still funny because he's so good natured,a really likeable guy.I can't wait for his next album,Eugene Mirman is definetly worth the download.
Hilarious!
Eugene Mirman's second album is arguably even better then his first. He uses incisive wit and a great stage presence to really make one laugh. His first CD has a few more laugh out loud moments, but this one feels more balanced. In fact, either one is worth picking up, though I'd suggest getting both. He's a very funny up-and-comer, and I hope he puts out another album soon. His comedy is just excellent, and reminds me of a cross between Hedberg and Cook, as he has a more relaxed stage presence than Cook (much like Hedberg), and uses stories to make his comedy work (like both Hedberg and Cook). Really a great album.
Good, but not much there
I personally thought that this guy's good jokes were hilarious, and worth the price of the CD. However, it was pretty inconsistent, and a little too short. The quality of his jokes really slumps for the middle third of the CD, to the point where he'd spend like 30 laughless seconds introducing a new topic only to deliver one moderately funny punchline, only to move immediately to another topic. However, it picks up again near the end. This disparity doesn't really bother me - you see it in most comedians. Not all jokes are gold, and it makes sense to sandwich your filler with gold. My real problem with this CD was how short it is. His act is only the first 13 tracks: give or take about 35 minutes. So rather than write any additional material for his set, he tries to beef up the length by adding an additional two tracks: 'Driving and Thinking' and 'The Goodnight Song'. I'll be blunt: these tracks are truly terrible. They're just him talking/singing to himself about his act. It's self indulgent, unfunny crap - a bunch of unpolished, poorly delievered jokes that would bomb if he tried to deliver them to a live audience. However, when this guy is in the zone, he's hilarious. His delivery's right on, he makes really funny observations, and his voice really stands out. I'm happy about my purchase, and you will be too, so long as you're comfortable paying $10 for what amounts to only about 20-35 minutes of worthwile content.
