Album Review
Not quite the fourth proper UNKLE full-length, End Titles...Stories for Film is a collection of tracks taken from the shelf (or elsewhere) after the completion of War Stories in 2007. Since UNKLE were abundantly busy during that short span of time, the album certainly has the potential for greatness. It includes several pieces of soundtrack work from Odyssey in Rome (a documentary that focused on director Abel Ferrara and the making of his film Mary) as well as UNKLE's BMW advert hit "Trouble in Paradise (Variations on a Theme)." But End Titles...Stories for Film wears the signs of its creation poorly, unlike the quite-good odds'n'sods collection More Stories, which despite its high quality was released only in Australia. (To make matters more difficult, several tracks appear on both collections.) The film music is best, including the atmospheric "Heaven," with a lovely vocal from Gavin Clark that calls into question why it wasn't included higher up in the track listing. "Trouble in Paradise (Variations on a Theme)" is also solid, along with the track "Chemical," featuring Josh Homme. UNKLE flooding the marketplace with confusing and overlapping product has happened before, so it's just another problem to lay at the feet of James Lavelle and wonder why a project that once seemed so promising appears to torpedo itself at every turn.

Excellent Pieces of Music
First off, the iTunes review isn't even for the right CD. They are reviewing "End Titles...Stories for Film" - another of Unkle's albums. This is "End Titles...Redux" which is a remix/reimagining of "End Titles...Stories for Film" with a greater emphasis on the orchestral pieces and melody. The end result is a beautiful new take on older material. The music is haunting and plays much like film score. Buy it.
Redux... more like reduced.
A new album by UNKLE marks a shift in paradigms for Lavelle and eveyone else involved. "End Titles... Stories For Film" and "More Stories" were too much of a B-Sides "War Stories" hybrid to be considered a different album, as we'd seen too much of the same stuff, taking UNKLE's climactic shifts in production angles thus far into account. Well, Redux takes the "End Titles..." and finally does what I wanted from a new UNKLE album: gives a new diretion to their music. This foray has been hinted at over the course of the past 3 albums (Pysence / Never Land / War Stories), but only fully realized after the advent of Lavelle's surrender sessions. They started taking music (by Autolux, Black Mountain, and others) and turning it into some sort of dark ambient soundscape (Find UNKLE's Surrender Sound Sessions #5 - Burn My Shadow for the best example). It seems that this album is an entire set demonstratin this approach to music, and in my mind makes it a definitive change and should therefore be the "real" fourth album. Oh yeah, it's really good too.
Can't Hurt (Redux) is hot
I just stumbled across this track. Love it. Ambient, orchestral and vibrant.
