iTunes Review
While most rappers give answers, DJ Shadow questions his audience. What does your soul look like? What does midnight in a perfect world sound like? How can you build steam with a grain of salt? This Davis, California DJ thinks visually, to the point that the mid-song interludes on "Transmission 1-3" seem influenced by the movie Angel Heart. Throughout, Shadow weaves sampled elements (sustained piano loop and a tricked-out chorale over a beat) into a beautiful suite. All cracks and pops on the album are real, a remnant of Endtroducing's magical cut-and-paste art form. This sonic confessional was just what hip-hop needed in 1996-a temperate, patient instrumental record filled with moods and emotions that still linger and resonate today.
Customer Reviews
Stylish, Artsy, and Creative
DJ Shadow gathers every musical style that has ever piqued his interest and throws it all together into a cool, mellow, and ambient masterpiece. If rock is vanilla, hip-hop chocolate, funk strawberry, and DJ Shadow the banana, then this album is the best banana split ever (or something like that). The music is a collage of styles and amazing drum work (drums seem to be the featured instrument, and they fit perfectly with the moody tracks); the final product sends you deep into the zone. Melodies are introduced and withdrawn, then reappear in a later track when you least expect them. I love the artistic and flowing atmosphere DJ Shadow creates. Voices also enter and exit, all part of the rhythm and music. The album is even funny at times...in a weird way ("her eyes were as big as jolly ranchers...beautiful girl..."). I'm proud to have this creative and expressive album in my collection; it's so complex, layered, and cool that each time I listen, I notice something I'd never heard before. It just keeps getting better.
if you dont like this album, we cant be friends
this album literally changed my life and turned me on to so many new styles of music that i never could have imagined liking as a naive 16 year old obsessed with golden age hip hop and classic rock. as embarassing as it is, the only reason i bought it in the first place was because some elitist punk made fun of me for claiming to like hip hop and not owning it, but i thank god that he did. there are no standout tracks, because literally the whole album is amazing, and must be listened to continuously in its entirety, although midnight in a perfect world is the embodiment of instrumental perfection. please do yourself a huge favor if you havent heard it yet, and buy the whole thing because its worth every penny.
Unstoppable...
DJ Shadow is a genius. He's not just a DJ, hes a composer and a poet. He can convey a message and evoke emotion without using any words, it's amazing. This album is a classic: Building Steam, Changeling/Transmission 1, What Does Your Soul Look Like (Parts 4 & 1), Stem/Long Stem/ Trans. 2, and Midnight in a Perfect World are all brilliant... Definitely check this album out. The Private Press is his next best, give it a look as well... Peace!
