Album Review
Vitamin's string quartet tribute to Radiohead should be sold as a package deal with Strung Out on OK Computer, the label's dour chamber music dedication to that sea change LP. The String Quartet Tribute to Radiohead: Enigmatic doesn't feature any material from Computer and only two songs from The Bends. It draws mainly from Kid A and Amnesiac, and nods to the OK Computer era by including the Airbag EP's "Palo Alto." Performed on a fleet of violins, a viola, and a cello, Enigmatic highlights include "My Iron Lung" (complete with psychotic mid-song breakdown), the drifting, anxious "Idioteque," and the churning "National Anthem." Like Strung Out, Enigmatic proves that the unsettling nature of many Radiohead songs comes at least in part from the music itself, since vocals have been removed for these recordings. For Radiohead completists only.
Customer Reviews
WOW...awesome & powerful music.
What a genius idea: taking beautifully-written songs and turning them into little cinematic orchestral-esque pieces. If you like soundtrack-type music, you can't live without this album. It's just the most amazing stuff, and I normally get into stuff like Kerry Muzzey, Hans Zimmer, James Horner, that sort of thing. There's no way you can NOT like this album. I can't wait to hear what they come up with next.
Proof of greatness
Stripping these brilliant songs to nothing but their FLAWLESS melody and beauty proves the genius of Radiohead's songcraft. Anyone who said post-Ok Computer albums don't have any melody needs to do some studying with these brilliant renditions.
Doesn't beat Christopher O'Riley
If you like this album, just do yourself a favor and check out Christopher O'Riley. You can find him on iTunes and his Radiohead tribute is unbelievable on piano. It sounds like the man has four hands, but I've seen him play the same pieces in concert and it literally is dumbfounding. Genuis.
