Album Review

The Allman Brothers Band's best studio album since Brothers and Sisters is a loud, brash, hard-rocking collection of consistently solid if not first-rate songs. The singing is some of the best since Idlewild South, and although they would do better once they brought in Warren Haynes, the dual-guitar lineup of Dickey Betts and Dan Toler is a reminder of what the group had been missing since Duane Allman's death. The music isn't earth-shattering, but it is exciting through and through.

Customer Reviews

The beginning of the end

Although the Allmans are my favorite band of all time, this album was the first step down a slippery slope that the Bros. didn't recover from for about 10 years. Crazy love and its background vocals went way too top 40. The loss of Duane really came out on this album. Dickey, although a fantastic songwriter most of the time, just went cheesy on this one. Pegasus, a upbeat instrumental, saved what would have otherwise been a weak output. If you are a fan of the Bros., buy the whole album and relish in the last of the great Allman Bros. of the 70's, but if you are just looking to learn their music, stick with Pegasus, Try it one more time, and Can't take it with you. RIP Bros., we'll see you again when Warren Haynes joins the band

The first Comeback album

In 1979, when Enlightened Rogues came out, the Allman Brothers Band hadn't put out anything in 3, drugged out, years. Those of us, who are big "Brothers" fans, couldn't wait to get our grubby mits on it when it finally came out. It didn't disapoint, no, it spoke to me. I played it over and again for weeks. Flash forward 25 years and how has the album held up? OK, so it didn't turn out to be the Holy Grail. "Enlightened Rogues" is still a must have for any Allman Brothers/Southern Rock fan. It wouldn't be until 1990, when Warren Haynes joined the band, the Allman Brothers Band would rise from the ashes to regain their Southern Rock throne. BTW - Not many people know that Don Johnson of "Miami Vice," wrote and played on this album.

Underrated

This album is awesome. The first cut is a bit top 40ish (one of the other reviews mentions this) but the rest of the album is great...and...you probably haven't heard the best cuts 100's of times.
