Album Review

The timba gospel emanates from Havana, but converts are showing up all over the globe. A growing number of non-Cuban groups perform this infectious dance style, and are doing so with varied results. One of the most notable mixed-nationality bands is Mamborama. Their 2003 debut CD, Entre la Habana y el Yuma, is an en clave throwdown session. With many groups simply trying to keep up with Havana's latest innovations, Mamborama clearly have an idea and sound of their own. With slow, funky tempos and Latin jazz-style solos uncharacteristic of modern timba, the half-Cuban, half-American group grooves like it owns the dancefloor. Mamborama are in no rush. The all-star lineup, including drummer/timbalero Jimmy Branley, vocalist Sixto "El Indio" Llorente, drummer/bandleader Giraldo Piloto, and guest Cesar "Pupy" Pedroso, commands respect, sight unseen. Once heard, the music earns all that respect and more. Of all the timba "outpost" groups, Mamborama could be the hippest. Entre la Habana y el Yuma is a very promising and irresistibly danceable debut ~ Evan C. Gutierrez, Rovi
