We know we’re a site devoted to video games and not music and we know that album reviews aren’t what you’re here to see, but if we were ever going to review an album on here, it would definitely be for an album by Guitar Hero legend, Steve Ouimette. Ouimette, who is most famous for his insane recreations of songs such as “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” and “We Three Kings”, recently released his first full-length album.

The album is made of mostly instrumentals, but there are a few tracks that contain vocals. Ouimette brings in some of his friends to sing along to his newly crafted tunes, including a familiar face; Chris Powers of Razer, who did vocals for “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” in Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock.

Fans of “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” will definitely find a lot to like to like in “Lou’s Revenge”, which serves as a sequel. The song sees the return of the Powers and Ouimette combo and definitely does not disappoint. It contains all the elements that drew fans into “The Devil Went Down the Georgia” in the first place; the powerful vocals, the fast paced metal, and, most importantly, the relentless shredding. There’s even a not-so-subtle nod to Guitar Hero III with the line “here I come through the fire and the flames!”

While many fans of Ouimette’s work in the Guitar Hero franchise will enjoy “Lou’s Revenge” and the oddly entertaining “Mr. Bones”, the real jewels of this album are the instrumentals. Each instrumental is so incredibly different from the next that you’ll often catch yourself forgetting you’re listening to the same artist. Due to the sheer diversity of the tracks, everyone will have their favorites, but we found ourselves constantly listening to “¡El Toro!”, an upbeat Spanish-inspired track that sounds like it would be right at home at a bullfight, and “This is Scorpion Gulch”, which could fit into a western flick as well as “The Ecstasy of Gold” by Ennio Morricone.

That’s the incredible thing about the instrumentals on this album; every track sounds as though it could fit into a movie score. Ouimette fully recognizes this. As he stated in our exclusive interview, every track has been made available for licensing, which means we could be hearing much more from these tracks than just this album.

Even if the aforementioned tracks do not appeal to you and you’re just looking to hear some of Ouimette’s old-fashioned shredding from the Guitar Hero series, Ouimette has got you covered as well. Ouimette has finally officially released his incredible remakes of “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” and “Dueling Banjos”. He’s also, just in time for the holidays, brought in his famous renditions of “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” and “We Three Kings” to round out the disc.

The only question this disc leaves us asking is “where could Ouimette go next?” Obviously, he will continue to work with Guitar Hero as long as they’ll have him, but as far as albums go, how can he top this release? The only thing we would like to see in particular would be for him to grab some of his fellow musicians and put out an album, like we’ve seen with Slash and Santana do in the past. We know he’s got some great connections with the fantastic vocalists from Guitar Hero, but he’s also worked with Alice Cooper and he knows the guys from Megadeth. We’d personally love to hear a track with Ouimette and Mustaine trading licks!

Ouimette is a master songwriter and that is on full display in his solo debut effort. The album is not just entertaining to listen to, it is awe-inspiring. From the brilliantly composed instrumentals to the spectacularly over-the-top vocal-inclusive tracks, the album definitely lives up to the lofty name. Fans of Guitar Hero, or just fans of fantastic guitar work with plentiful substance would be wise to check out EPIC by Steve Ouimette. Here’s to hoping we see plenty of this album on Guitar Hero soon!

This is real music, and the sad thing is, it is so underrated and unheard of, that no one can spread the awesome word of Steve Ouimette. Don't hate on me, but I officially heard Steve Ouimette off of Guitar Hero, from Devil Went Down to Georgia, and We Three Kings (We Three Kings being my favorite Steve Ouimette song, and one of my favorite songs in general). Actually, let me stop right here and give you a description of how awesome Steve Ouimette really is:

I was listening to Steve Ouimette one day, and as I was halfway through "WeThree Kings", about a thousand miniature unicorns came through my window, massaged my ears, and gave me immortality.
