Definitive Tosh

Let's establish something up front. Everyone comes up short compared to Marley, even greats like Burning Spear and Jimmy Cliff. The fact that Tosh and Marley were in the same band for years brings this home more clearly. I don't know if, as the I-Tunes review states, that Equal Rights was supposed to be the record that pushed Tosh past Marley. That was a tall order even back then. But I do know the review fails to recognize that Equal Rights is a masterwork. Six out of the ten songs on this album, Equal Rights, Downpressor, Razor, African, Apartheid and Get Up, are reggae standards by anyone's estimation and the rest are tracks most artists would love to have written. Tosh did not have Marley's vocal range or agility (but, again, who did besides David Ruffin, Sam Cooke and, of course, Jackie Wilson, very rare company indeed!). The songs don't leap off the disc like Wailer's tracks. Instead, they dig in with a steady groove and never leave once you hear them.

This is probaly my favorite album of all time from one of my favorite artists. If you like Reggae i would highly recomend it.

Singer, musician, composer, and rebel Peter Tosh cut a swathe through the Jamaican musical scene, both as a founding member of the Wailers and as a solo artist. He toured with the Rolling Stones and had an international hit with a duet with Mick Jagger, then toured again to equally rapturous world audiences as the headlining act.
