iTunes Review

Escape Route displays the most personal and sincere rhymes of Joe Budden’s career. On “Clothes On a Mannequin” the Harlem native vents the frustration of an artist whose quest for success has left him dubious and depleted: “I'm too annoyed to cope, tryin’ to make a livin’ / Given I don’t think that being a dope boy is dope / Out of every story, only two end in glory / Who am I to think I'm different than every hustler before me?” Escape Route is dotted with striking moments of self-revelation, and although the beats are dirty and aggressive throughout, songs like “Forgive Me,” “State of You” and “Never Again” address subjects such as aging, self-doubt, and internal strife with a candor and clarity rarely seen in modern day rap music. In the last verse of “State of You” Budden breaks into unprecedented emotional territory: “Or is it how I view life, and how vacant it is / Watch me and see a horrible movie, bad reviews / Scattered views with a cold heart, wrong attitude / I ain't got a thing in common with these rapper dudes / Okay, aside from some drawn-out thoughts, mags and tools / I don't think they know what it FEEL like to be battered, bruised.”

Introspective hottness!!

No Joke - i was sleep on Joe Budden he was garbage to me from day one but that Slaughter House is FIRE! which got me interested in this guy again. Then he drops Escape Route and blows me away. First, Bigups on the Production it is insane especially tracks 3,4,5,6,7,10,11. Second, JB delivers some very insightful, grown man verses that go way beyond todays bling infested "rap" lyrics...no drug sells, no pistols popin', no female degrading, just raw emotion....a true MC!! His music has definitely matured over the years and at this point I am all in!! Keep the heat coming!!! Slaughter House is the Best career decision he made and it shows on this album. Among all the wackness that is out today I would rate this album 10 stars!!!!!!! BTW, this album is not for the mentally challenged...so step your game up, read a book or two, and get a dictionary out. This is not a "Cat in the Hat" album, Trix are for kids chumps!!!

What More Can He Do...

Few artist deliver a real message in their music nowadays like Joey. How people sleep on such a gifted talent, I would never understand. This album is flawless from the intro right until the last track. Think mood music, but with more direction...

Great Album

The whole album is very good but stand out tracks are: 1,3,4,5,10

Biography

Born: August 31, 1980 in New York, NY

Genre: Hip Hop/Rap

Years Active: '00s, '10s

The ridiculous success of 50 Cent in early 2003 opened the floodgates for other street-level, mixtape-bred rappers, one of whom was Joe Budden, a Jersey City rapper with a distinct loose-cannon style molded from years of freestyling. Born in Spanish Harlem and raised in Queens, Budden came of age across the Hudson River in Jersey City, which he proudly continued to rep in his rhymes despite its somewhat unsavory reputation relative to more traditional hip-hop breeding grounds like Harlem, Brooklyn,...
